Thus far, Michael Mukasey has served as an effective caretaker for Bush’s regime of secrets and scandals. But all that may change, as Mukasey gets himself deeper and deeper into the cover-ups.
As of now, someone–either at the White House or in DOJ–has declined to support executive privilege to prevent Rove’s testimony before the House judiciary tomorrow. And, in a hearing before the Senate, the AG suggested there were other avenues to investigate Rove’s role in the Siegelman prosecution besides OPR.
Is it possible Mukasey supports an HJC inquiry into the issue? Hard to believe, given the other stuff Mukasey said today, but someone ought to at least ask.
Both the defense and prosecution introduced a bunch of articles referencing the Plame leak–and particularly OVP’s role in it–between September 27, 2003 to October 12, 2003. But some are missing–most importantly, a bunch that came out while Libby was in Jackson and Cathie Martin was apparently in DC making statements claiming Libby wasn’t involved.
Mukasey’s defense of John Yoo in his commencement address at Boston College Law School has drawn a lot of attention. But it’s the logic behind his defense, and not the defense per se, that really concerns me.
The entire opinion disqualifying General Thomas Hartmann in Salim Hamdan’s show trial is worth reading. But I’m particularly struck by the coincidence of timing. The Bush Administration started focusing on show trials at precisely the same time as it was firing a bunch of US Attorneys for political reasons.
