About bmaz
Bmaz is a rather large saguaro cactus in the Southwestern Sonoran desert. A lover of the Constitution, law, family, sports, food and spirits. As you might imagine, a bit prickly occasionally. Bmaz has attended all three state universities in Arizona, with both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Arizona State University, and with significant post-graduate work (in physics and organic chemistry, go figure) at both the University of Colorado in Boulder and the University of Arizona. Married, with both a lovely child and a giant Sasquatch dog. Bmaz has been a participant on the internet since the early 2000’s, including active participation in the precursor to Emptywheel, The Next Hurrah. Formally joined the Emptywheel blog as an original contributing member at its founding in 2007. Bmaz grew up around politics, education, sports and, most significantly, cars; notably around Formula One racing and Concours de Elegance automobile restoration and showing. Currently lives in the Cactus Patch with his lovely wife and beast of a dog, and practices both criminal and civil trial law.

Real Football Is Here Again, Rock The Wheelhouse!
/88 Comments/in emptywheel/by bmazOkay, rough start for the season in the Pac-12 South. The Devils sucked, and Texas A & M handed them their asses. Really ugly. And some random B1G team, okay, the Mighty Fighting Journalists, whipped, even worse, the Trees of Stanford. Oh, yes, and there was a “Gronking To Remember” Thursday night. That line came […]
Beyond Deflategate: The NFL Season Begins
/91 Comments/in Football, Fuckstickery, Labor, Law, Trash Talk/by bmazHi there! How ya doing! Because I have been oppressed with this Tom Brady porn bullshit from blog partner and sister, that Wheel person. Very ugly and unnecessary. But I am going to let it stand for all of posterity, not to mention both of our posteriors. Still, you have to wonder when enough is […]
The Deflategate Decision: Brady Has Been Freed!
/58 Comments/in Football, Fuckstickery, Law, Press and Media, Trash Talk/by bmazemptywheel sez: We interrupt this in depth legal discussion to point out that the WOLVEREENIES ARE BACK!! Better still, they’ve got unbeatable juju going into tonight’s game against Utah. That’s because (unreported among all the other less important Deflategate legalisms) the Wolvereenies have ALREADY worked together to score today. That’s right. You see, […]
ESPN Is Gutless, Chris Mortenson Has Tiny Deflated Balls and Other Deflategate Trash Talk
/43 Comments/in Culture, Football, Fuckstickery, Galactic Stupidity, Law, Trash Talk/by bmazHi there! Been a while, hope this account still works and State Secrets or something has not overcome due process on this here blog. So, here we are in the waning days of summer. I would have written more about the Formula One Circus but, frankly, it has mostly bored the heck out of me […]
FDL: Looking At Things As They Were; Dreaming Of Things That Never Would Be
/67 Comments/in 2008 Presidential Election, Culture, Democrats, Elections--Historical, Galactic Stupidity, Ideas and Ideology, Law, Obama Administration, Press and Media/by bmazThere are multiple better voices here to address the apparent demise of Firedoglake, whether briefly or at length. I was, in a way, an interloper by chance. By fortune, actually. Because I was asked, for inexplicable reasons I will never fully understand, but will always treasure, to join Emptywheel when it morphed from The Last […]
A Tale of Celebrity Bon Vivant Civil Servants and Access Journalism
/4 Comments/in Class War, Culture, Fuckstickery, Ideas and Ideology, Law, Obama Administration, Press and Media/by bmazThere is a distinct problem in this country with excessive inbreeding of politicians, lobbyists and journalists. In a country where so many are now ruled by so few in power, it is becoming, if not already become, the biggest threat to American democracy. I would add in corporations, but, heck, who do you think the […]
Criminal Sexual Assault: No Means NO Burden Shifting
/11 Comments/in Ideas and Ideology, Law/by bmazLate last night here, early this morning where many of you are, I saw an article pop up on the New York Times website by Judith Shulevitz on “Regulating Sex”. The title seemed benign enough, but thanks to my friend Scott Greenfield, and his blog Simple Justice, Ms. Shulevitz has been on my radar for […]
I Am Ted Williams’ Head
/20 Comments/in Fuckstickery/by bmazOkay, long story short, a couple of months ago my wife set me up with her dermatologist for a head to toe skin exam to insure against skin melanoma. A perfectly reasonable thing, though, to be honest, would not have otherwise been on my pretty much lunkheaded list of things to do. Okay, so, today […]
