About bmaz
Bmaz is a rather large saguaro cactus in the Southwestern Sonoran desert. A lover of the Constitution, law, family, sports, food and spirits. As you might imagine, a bit prickly occasionally. Bmaz has attended all three state universities in Arizona, with both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Arizona State University, and with significant post-graduate work (in physics and organic chemistry, go figure) at both the University of Colorado in Boulder and the University of Arizona. Married, with both a lovely child and a giant Sasquatch dog. Bmaz has been a participant on the internet since the early 2000’s, including active participation in the precursor to Emptywheel, The Next Hurrah. Formally joined the Emptywheel blog as an original contributing member at its founding in 2007. Bmaz grew up around politics, education, sports and, most significantly, cars; notably around Formula One racing and Concours de Elegance automobile restoration and showing. Currently lives in the Cactus Patch with his lovely wife and beast of a dog, and practices both criminal and civil trial law.

A Letter For Rod Rosenstein To Remember
/26 Comments/in 2016 Election, 2016 Presidential Election, Congress, Department of Justice, Mueller Probe, Trump Administration/by bmazBefore there were internet “memes” there were still plays in words that conveyed huge situations beyond the mere words. One was “A Night To Remember”. Yes, even before the famous movie (and before the sappy and stupid “Titanic” decades later), it was an earlier book about the Titanic disaster. There are daily shipwrecks as significant […]
Tell The Truth: Who’s Been Bullying Who
/19 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Culture, Department of Justice, Fuckstickery, Law/by bmazThe internet is a strange, yet consummately wonderful place. It allows for a feed from thought leaders and journalists, and with a new age real time speed emphasis, with the ability of other, and different on a granular level, voices to respond. It is a wonderful, even if still difficult, medium of interaction. Twitter is […]
The Tuesday Night Massacre
/82 Comments/in 2016 Election, 2016 Presidential Election, Class War, Congress, Democrats, Department of Justice, Fuckstickery, Law, Mueller Probe, Russian hacks, Trump Administration/by bmazAs you may have heard, President Trump has just fired FBI Director James Comey. This is truly Nixonian Saturday Night Massacre level action. Trump previously ran on, indeed got elected on, and likely only on, the scurrilous rogue comments of Jim Comey starting with the rogue July 5, 2016 press conference where Comey went off […]
Sean Hannity Cries Himself A River
/13 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Fuckstickery, Press and Media, Trump Administration, We Are All Fucked/by bmazThere has been a lot of upheaval at Fox News lately. Gretchen Carlson went nuclear on Ailes and the misogynistic rapey culture that Fox cultivated over decades, and nothing has been the same there since. That is a good thing. It may have been a limited, even if loud start, but Carlson initiated ripples in […]
When “They” Go Low, The WHCA Grovels In The Gutter With Them
/19 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Press and Media, We Are All Fucked/by bmazSo, Trump accused the American press of being “enemies of the state”: “A few days ago I called the fake news the enemy of the people, and they are — they are the enemy of the people,” Trump told the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Well, golly, what did that mean?? Yes, it is soooo […]
Stephen Miller’s and Trump’s Gross Re-Politicization of DOJ
/58 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Bush Administration, Department of Justice, Domestic Policy, Law, Trump Administration/by bmazThere was some legitimate concern about inappropriate machination of the Department of Justice when Trump named and confirmed Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General. Typical discussion followed this by Isaac Arnsdorf at Politico: Donald Trump suggested on the campaign trail that he could use the Justice Department to fulfill his political agenda, taunting Hillary Clinton […]
NFL Championship Sunday Trash Talk
/41 Comments/in Football, Trash Talk/by bmazAs exciting as the Women’s March was yesterday, and it was stunningly awesome to behold, today we have football. And not just any football, it is Championship Sunday. First up is Green Bay at Atlanta. The Pack has been on such a roll of late that it is hard to bet against them. But Atlanta […]
