About bmaz
Bmaz is a rather large saguaro cactus in the Southwestern Sonoran desert. A lover of the Constitution, law, family, sports, food and spirits. As you might imagine, a bit prickly occasionally. Bmaz has attended all three state universities in Arizona, with both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Arizona State University, and with significant post-graduate work (in physics and organic chemistry, go figure) at both the University of Colorado in Boulder and the University of Arizona. Married, with both a lovely child and a giant Sasquatch dog. Bmaz has been a participant on the internet since the early 2000’s, including active participation in the precursor to Emptywheel, The Next Hurrah. Formally joined the Emptywheel blog as an original contributing member at its founding in 2007. Bmaz grew up around politics, education, sports and, most significantly, cars; notably around Formula One racing and Concours de Elegance automobile restoration and showing. Currently lives in the Cactus Patch with his lovely wife and beast of a dog, and practices both criminal and civil trial law.

About That Styx Thing, A Re-Thinking
/54 Comments/in Fuckstickery, Yeah/by bmazHad a busy day yesterday and then came to the stark understanding that a significant contributor to this blog had included a Styx Grand Illusion video in a post. I am hoping you can imagine my dismay! I still have not recovered. I just….I cannot….even. Despite the ill video, the post was great and spot […]
His Girl Friday, But At The New York Times
/21 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Culture/by bmazThere is a wiki level amount of coverage currently of the so called “Fourth Estate”. It seems so trite and antiquated now. How will an honest press deal with an aberrant malefactor writ large like Donald J. Trump? It is no longer a test question, it is reality. Do you continue to showcase the malefactors […]
The NY Times, Sekulow and Dowd’s Sophistry and Trump’s King Like Viewpoint
/34 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Law, Trump Administration, Unitary Executive/by bmazI have obligations that I seriously must run out the door for, but this need to be posted so that it can be dissected. The inestimable crew of Haberman, Schmidt et. al have posted a rather amazing letter 20 page letter issued on behalf of Trump by his attorneys at the time, Jay Sekulow and […]
Baku, Belichick and the NFL Draft
/26 Comments/in Football, Formula One, Trash Talk/by bmazOkay, it has been a while since we had a real Trash Talk. So here we go. Not a particularly deep one, but between the NFL Draft, which has been pretty interesting, and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, it seemed like a decent opportunity for one of our off season points to talk a […]
The Day The Music Died In F1
/37 Comments/in Trash Talk/by bmazThis is not to detract from a few other similar dates, Von Trips and Senna come to mind (see here for background on Von Trips at the Italian at Monza and Senna at the closely related venue of Imola). They are dark days, but bookend maybe the greatest loss in F1, that of Jim Clark, […]
