Trash Talk – 2009 NCAA Bowl Edition

Hey, it turns out we have a New Year going here! Happy New Year to yours, mine and 2009. 2008 basically sucked on a lot of important fronts, but it did lay the groundwork for hope. But that is the serious stuff, right now we got some college football to play. Who is your team, and who are they going to beat in what bowl? Since ASU didn’t quite make the grade this year (that is an understatement) I will have to roll with the USC Trojans. Michigan is nowhere to be found either, so EW is going to have to pick a horse. Will it be Traveler and the Trojans??

Now I really like JoePa and the Nittany Lions, but they have a problem. They went and joined the Big 10. You simply cannot do that and expect to beat USC (or anybody else in the PAC 10 for that matter) in a bowl game. Especially the Rose Bowl.

Here is a list of all the bowl games. Hoot, holler and trash it up please. You owe it to yourself and all of us!

  1. Gunner says:

First off,may everyone have a good 2009. bmaz Penn St may surprise you, it should be a barn burner.

  2. JimWhite says:

Dang, looks like the Ole Ball Coach is going to cost the SEC its perfect record in the bowls, down 21-zip at the half.

I think the Gators will roll big over the Sooners, especially since the Sooners don’t have their running back or tight end. The Gators still won’t have their tight end either, but it looks like Harvin will be 100%.

    Florida 42 Oklahoma 14

Upset alert: Mississippi 28 Texas Tech 21

And I’ll upset bmaz and say JoePa just might have one more big surprise (can’t have Pac 10 go 5 and oh!).

Happy New Year to one and all.

May it include many convictions and sentences for Bushies.

      • bmaz says:

Man, LadyDiego must really be something to have you constantly babbling about the Southwest Conference like that.

Naw USC will win big. It is the Rose Bowl, that is just what they do there. USC should have been in the title game. Again. At least is wasn’t Ohio Fake University that they got punked for this time. I guess that is progress.

        • randiego says:

Man, LadyDiego must really be something to have you constantly babbling about the Southwest Conference like that.

Dude, Big-12 South. Get it right.

        • JimWhite says:

Yeah, without Arkansas they’re just not the same any more, so the old name isn’t appropriate.

What’s with Georgia? Stafford almost looks like he’s trying to lose. Georgia’s been a second half team this year (except in the Gator game), so they could come back, but they sure were flat in the first half.

        • JimWhite says:

The second half Dawgs came through.

It’s tough to pull for Penn State but I want to keep Paterno ahead of Bowden. At least Paterno has class; Bowden is a bum.

        • freepatriot says:

          Get it right.

          they got it right

it took something like 8 computers or something, but they figured it out …

          Oklahoma an the 5 dwarfs

          aka, the big 12 south

        • Neil says:

USC should have been in the title game. Again.

I could not agree more. They played today and they played all season like one of the top two teams in the nation.

  3. randiego says:

Rose Bowl is shaping up as a defensive battle. Go SC!

Jim White keeps saying that Ole Miss is going to “surprise” Texas Tech… feh. Go Tech! (Why the heck is that game so early?)

Otherwise, I’m rooting for the other Big-12 South teams to crush their opponents: Texas v Ohio St in the Fiesta, and Oklahoma v FLA – show ‘em this season was no fluke!

  4. randiego says:

All this is window dressing for the BIG showdown, at The Murph on Saturday night!

Colts and Bolts – gonna be a great one, and we’ll see if all this “cannon fodder” talk around these parts holds any water!

Lightning Bolts will be wearing their Powder Blues under the lights – The NFL dug ‘em out and sent ‘em back after they had previously been donated for a charity auction…

  5. radiofreewill says:

Trojans club the Lions, 31-21; USC has too much Speed

Longhorns gore the Buckeyes, 38-13; OSU is Weak

Rebels crush the Raiders, 38-28; Ole Miss in Blue, Tech in Astronaut Diapers

Gators chomp the Sooners, 52-10; Jim White must be expecting Rain

  6. JClausen says:

“How bout them Hawks” Iowa 31 South Carolina 7

My best to you and yours, bmaz and wheel, you give me sanity in an insane world.

  7. runfastandwin says:

USC, it seems every year lately they start at number one, and somehow every year they manage to blow it, but I think they get by Penn State about 52-12. Then the AP votes them number one after OK and FL both look stinky in a 63-57 final score. Finally, the NCAA realizes that instant replay is wrong as often as it is right, and gets rid of it.

That’s my dream anyhow. And for the record, I despise USC with the passion of a billion burning white hot suns.

And if Utah wins, I am making them the National Champs, and the way things are run these days my opinion is just as valid as anyone’s.

      • randiego says:

Okay… never understood how you could shift gears on a tranny without disengaging the engine. You’d need some pretty special syncro to match variable engine speed…

That commercial reminds me. Have you ever seen the “The Rendezvous”? My brother busted it out on Christmas – that was cool.

    • freepatriot says:

okay, what the heck is a “syncrorev match manual transmission”?

if you have to ask, it’s something you can’t afford …

  8. foothillsmike says:

I see many of you are watching the CITI Bank US taxpayer Rose Bowl. Looking forward to seeing the Sooners doing their thing with the Gators. Won’t be any Gator Aid on jan 8

      • bmaz says:

Hey, listen, that damn song and fucking white horse are absolutely unbearable when they get going too. Trust me, I have been on the wrong side of that a few times with my ASU Sun Devils. I know how it feels……

        • freepatriot says:

Hey, listen, that damn song and fucking white horse are absolutely unbearable when they get going too

how do you feel about Prairie Schooners ???

ever seen what happens when a Chuck Wagon gets a hold of some gator meat ???

        • randiego says:

damn, ’bout time you showed up.

Plenty of predictions that your Sooners are gonna go down… if I’m the only one providing any pushback you guys are in trouble!

        • Gunner says:

I dos believe Bradford will have Gator for dinner. In fact there will be enough for the whole team.

        • freepatriot says:

Plenty of predictions that your Sooners are gonna go down…

          it’s called respect

they hate us cuz they care about us

          we’re in their heads …

think about it, who hates Wafford ???

and a hat tip to JimWhite …

        • JimWhite says:

Seems like the last time out it looked like they were going to have to call a tow truck for that thing. It broke down in the middle of the field during the Big 12 Championship game.

If you aren’t a Gator, you’re Gator bait!

But you can borrow my joke about Tennessee and use it for Oklahoma State since they wear Orange, too.

Know why their fans wear all that orange? It’s so they can go hunting on Friday, go to the game on Saturday and pick up trash on the side of the road in their court-ordered community service on Sunday without ever having to change their clothes.

  9. JimWhite says:

Guess JoePa doesn’t have another big upset in him after all. At least not this one. Much as it hurts a UCLA alum to say this, SC looks good today.

    Go Gators.

  10. radiofreewill says:

    Jan. 9, 2009

    The Miami Herald Classifieds

    • freepatriot says:

that ad is gonna feature some gator skin boots

low quality skins at rock bottom prices

hey, joepa gets a break, it’s a FUMBLE

  11. freepatriot says:

who’s idea was it to name a college football team after a condom anyway ???

    /intentional obtuseness

  12. JimWhite says:

Here’s what the first round would look like if we had an 8 team playoff, using the BCS standings for seeding:

    (1)Oklahoma—–
    ———————-1-8 Winner—
    (8)Penn State—
    .
    —————————————–Finalist
    .
    (4)Alabama——
    ————————4-5 Winner—
    (5)USC———-
    .
    .
    .

    (2)Florida——
    ——————2-7 Winner—
    (7)Texas Tech—
    .
    —————————————–Finalist
    .
    (3)Texas——–
    ——————-3-6 Winner—
    (6)Utah———

Tell me that wouldn’t be more fun than watching freakin’ Cincinnati-Virginia Tech.

    • freepatriot says:

in a better world, we would be watchin florida vs Oklahoma right now

      winner meets usc next week

and as an added bonus, we would all get to laugh at texas, too

      • bmaz says:

Now THAT would be an appropriate Orange Bowl game!

Joe Pa was incredible in post game interview. Gotta love and respect the dude.

      • freepatriot says:

oopps, I musta been thinkin of his cousin

seriously, I gotta wonder if this guy’s got a brother called “Ball Joint”, what’s up with that ???

that was a 5 minute conversation for the ages

    • freepatriot says:

Penn State’s Band playing “bohemian rhapsody” at halftime in the Rose Bowl was more surprising to me

but you gotta keep in mind that the average sports fan is a friggin mook, considering that “We Will Rock You-We Are The Champions” is a sports stadium staple

      it’s a Gay Anthem, ya know ???

so I kinda crack up when I see a bunch of homophobes singing it (not that all football fans are homophobic, or lack awareness)

btw, I always got a kick when our highschool band played “Day Tripper” at halftime too

    • bmaz says:

This is really rough, but I am going to try to root for the Texas Team; not for you, but for the little lady. She clearly suffers enough!

    • freepatriot says:

what’s the weather forecast for the greater San Diego area for Saturday night ???

it’s raining here, 500 miles northwest of SD. Are you guys gettin any of this ???

any chance that peyton gets to throw spitballs ???

I already know the field sucks, any chance the primordial ooze has more surprises for goober ???

  13. JimWhite says:

The shootout is all even at 14 early in the second quarter. Very interesting game so far. I’ll stick with the Rebels; they’re looking good and didn’t get rattled from a couple of early mistakes.

  14. bmaz says:

Hey, anyone seen surfer guy or got any messages for him about this Texazz Tek thing going on?

Looks like Jim White wuz right!

This could bode very ill for those Sooners…..

    • freepatriot says:

This could bode very ill for those Sooners…..

texans shooting their own toes off bodes ill for Oklahoma ???

      how so ???

tek had a few brain farts in the third quarter, but that’s what you would expect from texans. it’s in their blood. there’s a rule in texas; if you make it to the age of 14 with all of your natural toes, ya gotta move to Oklahoma or Arkansas

      (wink)

    • JimWhite says:

I’m not ready to celebrate yet, it’s back to a 10 point game.

The Sooner fans will shake it off, though. After all, they beat the Raiders by 42…

  15. freepatriot says:

tek lost by the margin of their second half mistakes. But they also had two impressive goal line stands

so tell me again how Big 12 defense sucks ???

and a team that beat florida was competitive against a team that never had a chance against Oklahoma

so it all depends on how ya look at it

(and YES, I really do hate the bcs)

    NEXT

  16. randiego says:

okay, we’re back from the game – my sweetheart is licking her wounds…

    she had a bad day…

Tech flat got outcoached. Ole Miss watched the game film from the OU game, obviously… Mike Leach had NO answer for the linebackers they kept blitzing – they never adjusted to it… and the defense that looked pretty good in the first quarter looked out of gas halfway through the second.

    Pretty disappointing performance.

Fox should never be allowed to do these games. What museum did they reanimate Pat Summerall from? C’mon, Pat Freakin’ Summerall? Then they had Shepard Smith doing the halftime show? Who’s next, Hannity?

    • JimWhite says:

My best to Mrs. R. They still had a great season and should finish in the top 15. The win over Texas was one for the ages and should finish as number one in the “Game Changing Performance” voting.

I thought Summerall was dead, too. The tech staff they had there really sucked. They missed critical camera angles on a lot of important plays and left their little “over the field” camera in view most of the time.

Looks like Kentucky might be ready to play the second half of their game; returned the 2nd half kickoff for a TD. I’m confident Alabama will handle Utah, so if Kentucky pulls it out, the SEC will be 6 and 1 after tonight.

  17. freepatriot says:

Kentucky decided to make a game of it by returning the second half kickoff for a touchdown, then they blew the extra point …

16 – 9 East Carolina, boding ill for florida …

    (ducking and running)

  18. radiofreewill says:

I think Crabtree’s ankle kept him from having a standout performance today, but Harrell was every bit as good as his billing.

Congrats to Texas Tech on an all-around Great Season for the Team, the Students and the Alums, too!

And, to mrs. randiego, you’re a great sport, I hope you’ll keep Trashing it up with us!

    2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar!
All for the Gators, stand up and holler!

  19. JimWhite says:

It’s a tough road to spot a team as good as Utah a 21-zip lead, but Bama is making a game of it.

    21-17 early in the third.

    Whatcha got, Utes?

  20. radiofreewill says:

Well, well, well…Alabama just wears opponents down.

Jim White, did you see that Kentucky stiff-arm today on the fumble recovery to win?

  21. radiofreewill says:

Clearly, the Tide hasn’t recovered from the pounding the Gators put on them in the SEC Championship!

They look like they spent the last month preparing for Utah by eating bon-bons and running-up their minutes complaining to their girlfriends.

    But, congrats to the Utes!

      • freepatriot says:

nothing wrong with two teams thinking they’re number one on the day after new years (or whenever the bcs gets thru it’s schedule)

  22. CTMET says:

Buffalo lost in the international bowl, but the ‘58 team was honored there. I was there and the fan support was amazing. Oh well something else for Turner Gill and the Bulls to accomplish next year.
