IA AG Tom Miller: Playing “Survivor” with Homeowners’ Futures
You may have heard that the Obama Administration and IA Attorney General are playing a giant game of Survivor with the homes of struggling Americans as the grand prize: they’ve kicked NY AG Eric Schneiderman off the island.
The New York Attorney General’s office was removed from a group of state attorneys general that is working on a nationwide foreclosure settlement with U.S. banks, according to a state official.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who has raised concern about terms of a possible deal, was removed from the executive committee of state attorneys general, according to an e-mail today from Iowa Assistant Attorney General Patrick Madigan.
Only they made a key mistake in their little game of Survivor.
Update: I obviously misread IA Asst AG Patrick Madigan and IL AG Lisa Madigan. Meaning Miller’s the one making this public, not AG Madigan.
Well then I guess he’s just being a dick.
Update: Wow, in the longer version of the Bloomberg story, Miller gets even more dickish:
“New York has actively worked to undermine the very same multistate group that it had spent the previous nine months working very closely with,” Miller said. For a member of the executive committee, that “simply doesn’t make sense, is unprecedented and is unacceptable,” Miller said.
[And I removed my earlier screwup.]
And Miller is a Democrat? The Democratic Party really is dying a slow and painful death.
When I read this is he just holding out for a better job in the private world of crime?
@jo6pac: As someone reminded me, as soon as Miller started this “investigation” he got big donations for the banks.
the key point
is not your mistakes, which are trivial,
but that the state of iowa’s attorney general, miller, is willing to serve as another obama-banco pressure point brought to bear on shneiderman.
what has miller been promised by obama-banco?
miller’s is a sham game all the way!
as glen greenwald points out,
no discovery has been filed for or occurred.
where are the corporate media in all this?
Where is California’s AG in all of this? ISTM the CA-AG oughta have more weight than the IA-AG (even though IA is where my Mother grew up, as a third generation resident of IA). California has some of the worst homeowners situation anywhere. Riverside County, especially.

@emptywheel:
Thank You just more business as usual
@Bob Schacht:
My question exactly, especially given how liberal Harris is (no death penalty, SF roots), would be why no one has heard anything from her office at all throughout this.
Also note that without CA and NY in the settlement, the big bucks won’t be in the group. Without them, the other AGs will not be able to enforce this settlement nationwide.
So, does anyone know how Kamala was bought off?
@rugger9:
there is this, so not really bought off, just overwhelmed maybe. Also remember she’s been state AG much less than a year.
@Phil Perspective: Hard to believe Obama is a Democrat. The Democratic Party is dead.
@rugger9:
Enforcing any settlement will not be of any issue.
The settlement will be a pittance and all that garbage unmarked to market bundled derivative packaging will be paid for by taxpayer money and any wealth left in the middle class . . . enforcement is a non issue, the issue is the settlement itself, hence the NY AG is a goner.
SEEMS simple to me, did I miss anything?
OT – Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman of the AP have a piece up on the CIA, domestically, and the NYPD working undercover and surveiling Muslims in New Jersey:
@MadDog: Yup, reading it now.
@P J Evans:
That would be referring to a small group of the loan-mod bottom feeders that are a consequence of the bankster fraud. It’s plain as day, and “too overwhelmed” won’t cut it as an excuse for me, there is something else that is keeping Kamala on the sidelines for the biggest bust of any AG’s life. She’d ride into the WH if she got jail time, nut like the national Dems, she thinks she can tap into the bankster $$$ somehow. The Dems need to understand that as long as there is a GOP or its spawn, the D’s aren’t going to get much at all. The SJMN had articles over the last couple of weeks regarding the SCC DA prosecuting more of these loan mod creeps, sentenced them too, so even the referenced article isn’t all that special.
How hard would it be for a political heavyweight like NY’s state AG to make the obvious point: he’s pursuing probable criminal behavior that too many people seem to want to hide, insulate, and immunize?
He’s already on the outs with the PTB, though one could also argue cynically that threatening to behave like a prosecutor is putting his ante on the table with a demand to be bought off. Less cynically, pursuing the obvious potential criminal behavior here is also a way to become immensely popular while also doing the right thing. He would only need to refuse the banksters’ re-election dollars in order to perform a rare, exquisite electoral hat trick.
@earlofhuntingdon:
It would certainly help his cred with NY in his election campaign.
@P J Evans: Schneiderman has also been state AG since only the beginning of this year. And Harris was DA of San Francisco County until she was elected AG.
Three cheers for Schneiderman for sheer guts. Let’s just hope he holds out and can bring Harris along.
