Trash Talk: Viva Los Suns!!
Shhhhh! Don’t anybody tell Marcy, but I am slipping an unauthorized trash in the mix; kind of like those randy journalists at Gitmo actually using a name, JOSHUA CLAUS, which has been in the public domain and global ether for a long time. I feel so rebellious. Question authority people!
Okay, there is no overarching reason for this trash, just seemed like we been into hot and heavy shit for a while now and some nerves are getting raw. Seemed like letting loose a little might be a good thing.
As you probably know by now, I live in one fucked up and legislatively mental midget state. When you ask these racist morons “what can brown do for you” they basically respond “fuck off and die”. All I can say is, as a native Arizonan who has spent most of his numerous years on the earth in Arizona, this is not what the Arizona I know, grew up in and love is about. Say what you will about Barry Goldwater, and much of the negative connotation of his name has always been overblown, I knew and remember him from the age I first really remember things from – maybe age five or six – and if he were alive he would be blasting the shit out of the idiots behind the current horsemanure. And he would be saying that John McCain is an opportunistic self important and self centered jackass that is only signing on to the current racism anti-brown profiling act because he cravenly thinks it might help him at the moment. Here is a news flash for the uninformed: This is exactly what Barry always thought of McCain.
So, out here in the desert, we are kind of fucked up. Like you didn’t know that after seeing Joe Arpaio, “The Most Cretinous Sheriff In America”, keep getting reelected by large margins. So, we got that going for us. But we also have Los Suns. And they are up 2-0 on San Antonio and are currently ahead [UPDATE – Los Suns Win Los Suns Win!!!] in game three on the Spurs’ home court, although there is time left in the game. The Spurs have been a thorn in the side of the Suns for freaking years. Trust me, I had lower level very good seats for more years than I can count, and Tim Duncan is relentlessly competent. We have been up on them 2-0 more than once and could not seal the deal. The Spurs never lose a game or a series, you have to beat them. And then step on their throat, because like Freddy Krueger, they keep coming back. You gots to admire the affirmative stand Steve Nash, Amare Stoudamire, Grant Hill and Los Suns have staked out on the Anti Minority Asshole Bigot Act. Viva Los Suns!!
Also this weekend is the Spanish Grand Prix. I’ll be honest, Catalunya is not my favorite track; it is a little sterile and cookie cutter corporate for me. Qualifying has not gone off yet, but Hamilton, Button, Schumacher, Vettel and Webber look fast after practice. The race goes off at 8:00 am EST Sunday, with coverage beginning at 7:30 am, all on Speed Channel.
Today’s musical selection is Sun King by the Cult, in honor of Los Suns of course. The Cult could flat out rip in their day. Some critics have said Ian Astbury is the reincarnation of Jim Morrison. I don’t know about that; I do not think there is anything quite like the Reverend Mojo Rising and, if there has been, it was more likely Michael Hutchence.
Bmaz, I feel for ya.
I happen to know several people from Arizona whom I respect quite as much as I respect you, and I do wonder how you maintain sanity with so many of your fellow citizens scairt outta their little minds by the prospect of brown, Spanish-speakin’ people ransacking their mobile homes (the reputed state of mind of some of your fellow ‘Zoners).
Agree with you about Goldwater.
In auto news today … thirty million for a Bugatti Atlantic …
(Wonder how much that one will ever be driven?)
Truly, Jean Bugatti’s best … but obscenely silly money.
BTW, Obama Co, MUST be reading your comments. In future, consider saying truly awful things about some SCOTUS nominee whom you actually like and respect …
But then, as EOH informs us, Kagan IS a pragmatist.
DW
Whoa. That is mind blowing. The Atlantic was actually Bugattis’s son’s gig if I recall correctly. Nice sled, but it ain’t no Bugatti Royale. $30 mil. Jeebus. there are too many of them for it to be worth that much, even in the rarified Concours de Elegance world.
Actually, bmaz, there are but two of these, based on the Electron Coupe.
Three were built, originally … an anonymous buyer bought this one.
Ralph Lauren owns the other.
Leno has a copy, of which a number(?) exist.
Yes, it was Ettorie’s son, Jean, who the designer of this car. He was killed in another type 57 while trying to avoid a bicyclist who cut in front of him.
Had he lived, so too might the marque …
A salute to Los Suns, for winning … and for standing against madness.
DW
Sounds to me like the consignors’ and auctioneers’ wet dream come true – two or more guys in the room who want the lot you’re selling, have deep pockets, and won’t be deterred.
As to Goldwater, he seems to have had some of that clear-eyed pioneer’s/pioneer’s kid’s ability to see through the bullshit and willingness to call it. Successfully living through being on the edge of catastrophe requires that one learn to separate the bullshit from the reality and allows no bullshit, illusion or self-delusion. You see the same kind of thing in small farmers, ranchers, small businessmen and the like. It’s the kids and grandkids of those hard-minded folks who wind up being pale imitations, reciting by rote things they think their parents and grandparents would have said and trying to outdo other, similar kids in being out there. That they can and do is a function of growing up fat and happy and never needing to develop the clarity their parents and grandparents had because they had enough comfort to smooth over and tolerate the bullshit.
That’s where Arizona is, and where the US is, too. It used to be said that Cali would be where the US will be in 5 or 10 years. The same – particularly as to stupidity – obtains as to AZ.
For your breakfast amusement: Poutine Cake
I love Arizona. I’ve loved it from the moment I first went there some sixty years ago (yes, indeed–it was June of 1949). It was the first time I ever met with a truly different cultural scene (Hopi pueblos, most memorably), and it gave me all the surprise that a ten-year-old from a narrow environment could possibly handle.
It’s a fact that communities regress when things destabilize. It has happened, and continues to happen, in every state of the union. And if Arizona caught me by surprise of late, it’s only because I wasn’t doing my homework.
Courage, ami!
As a fellow Zonie, though one who’s only been here 26 years, I’m with you all the way, bmaz. ¡Viva Los Suns!, though I’m really more the ¡Viva Los Coyotes! type. What I don’t get is why all those pasty white bigots moved here in the first place. I’m here because I love the Southwest, and that means embracing Hispanic and Native American cultures just as much as it means great birding and photography. Why did those others come? Didn’t they realize that the Southwest has been populated by brown people since before their families even thought of emigrating to the US? What were they thinking?
Oh, I think hte pasty white bigots went to AZ for the air conditioning.
JOSHUA CLAUS! (Heh, reminds me of the time many of us were using jus cogens as a greeting.)
Speaking as a current resident of one fucked up and legislatively mental midget state (Florida) and native of another (Oklahoma), I can tell you that I feel your pain. There’s just no accounting for some people.
Looks like the Gators and Sun Devils are still on a collision course for Omaha. I’ll see you there.
Your Suns are looking pretty good now.
Poster of the day!
If you think McBush is bad, wait till you see what happens if the Portman jerk from Ohio gets elected.
Boxturtle (GOPer wingnut tool just doesn’t seem to cover it)
Spurs didn’t play well last night, looks like los suns are going to get through this round in flying colors. alas for my Spurs–
Still, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for SA, so they’ve done well to get to the second round.
We’ll be back.
bmaz,
You actually started to write this trash talk during that awful first quarter? Ick. But I see that you hung in there until the Suns rallied. Their 4th Quarter was awesome. The Spurs just collapsed. I guess they’re getting old, even though Manu still looks like he’s playing like a kid. The fact that they missed so many free throws in the first half was a harbinger.
Gentry abandoned his platoon system and started mixing the starters and the bench with finesse. I was especially surprised with how long Gentry stuck with the Brazilian Flash, who made quite a few wretched blunders before finding his mojo.
But I have a bone to pick with this “Los Suns” thing. I’m totally with the solidarity angle, but if you’re going to do solidarity with Spanish-speaking people, couldn’t they do a better job of hispanicizing their name? I mean, shouldn’t it be “Los Solares”? Not that I have any competence in Spanish.
Bob in AZ
I’m no expert (can get by with short sentences and/or curse words ;-)) and somebody can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s soles
PS I think Cinco de Mayo is wrong too. I’m pretty sure it should be Quinto de Mayo
Cinco = 5
Quinto = 5th
bmaz,
You wrote this post just to write, “Viva Los Suns,” and “JOSUA CLAUS,” and in all caps no less for the latter.
But you really wanted a forum for the following:
I just think you should have bold faced that first sentence. Just say’n.
Any hoo, thanks for a “lighter side, decompression” post.
bobschact is correct, “Los Solares!”
Hey bmaz, the circuit is really no fun for spectators, I agree. Webber beat out vettel who did not seem as edgy as usual.
Go les Soleils!!!
For your Saturday, a bit of humor, though with a bitter edge, on the subject of AZ’s outrageous law. (A few wonderful, though sad, pictures down-thread, too.)
And, yes, Go Los Suns!
Reminds me of this from Clay Bennett
Thnx. Nice cartoon.
Will Schumi get his first podium this weekend? He looks more comfortable in the new stretch Mercedes. The Red Bulls will be walking away at almost a second per lap, so the race is for third… Hamilton? Schumacher? Alonzo?
Michael seemed to understand going in that it would take a bit to sort both himself and the car out. I kind of assumed the first half of the season would be kind of a throwaway and the second half would be when to really see how he and the job are going. One thing to always remember about Schumi is he is a master at sorting out and fine tuning car setups. It took him a while to get things right at Ferrari when he first went there too.
All due respect to Los Suns, but it should be noted that the first-place San Diego Fathers professional baseball team wears their team name in Espanol on the front of their jerseys every night of the season. Go Padres!
Can you imagine if they were really called the San Diego Fathers? I wonder if the incidents of paternity suits would increase, or if they would try to live up to their name. Or, they might have to receive instruction that the “Fathers” in question were ostensibly celibate Catholic Priests, and that the “Fatherhood” in question was the spiritual, and not the biological kind?
I’m guessing that kind of discussion could get to be something of a distraction. (heh)
Bob in AZ
Back in the late 80’s when Steve Garvey was a local hero for his big HR in the ’84 playoffs AND he’d been busy fathering several children out of wedlock, people in San Diego would where jerseys with #6 on the back and “Who’s Your Padre?” on the front.
The two big “clean” all american So Cal sports heros in the late 70s and 80s, Steve Garvey and Bruce Jenner; look at them both in retrospect and it is pretty chilling.
Bmaz
The other big sporting event of the weekend is the final games of the Premier League (UK Soccer). Chelsea, who IMHO have played the most entertaining soocer this season, have simply to match Manchester United’s result to be champions, ie if MU win, so must Chelsea. Both are playing at home against inferior opposition, so it looks good, but then I had high hopes of the Liberal Democrats in the UK election, and look what happenned to them. (I voted Liberal in the 60s when they had 5 MPs and used to get 5% of the vote.)
With regard to F1, the last couple of years have proven to me that the car is far more important than the driver. Jenson Button was pretty much a wanker until last season when he got a great car. This year Mark Webber, who really impressed me based on an appearance on Top Gear, went from someone who was more likely not to finish to a real competitor, largely because Red Bull have such a good car. Thank goodness the races are back in Europe so that I can watch them at 7.00am (Central) rather than 2.00am or 3.00am.
Go Los Suns and Steve Nash who is a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur (a UK Premier League soccer team) but not the San Antonio Spurs.
Two thirds of the race is in, Webber leads Hamilton and vettel. The backmarkers are doing their best to stay out of trouble, and of the way of the leaders. On a few occasions, their gentlemany ways almost caused a couple of crashes.
F1 wants more passing, a safer race, and big audience numbers. The only way to attain that would be to change the rules pertaining to the breaking hardware. Disks should be metal, four calipers, unlimited number of pads for the weekend. The goal would be to extend breaking distance by a factor of two. I’d even call for a single manufacturer. No anti lock of any sort. Another thing I’d like to see is for the paddle shifter to revert back to a shift lever with an H pattern mated to a foot clutch that has to be used for every shift or downshift. Oh yeah, get Villeneuve back in.
Happy mother’s day, Allez les Soleils!!!
bmaz –
heartily concur with your take on Goldwater. no one’s asked, but I’ve long thought Tupac took up the Lizard King’s mantle
oh, and this Spurs fan will be rooting for Los Suns
Consider me our resident lurking Spurs fan (in Austin): I talk no trash; never have, except
maybeto the TV during the game(s).I talk no trash, though I grieve that my heroes may have slipped beyond the playoffs’ event horizon and into the vortex of the past glories of the NBA’s yesteryear.
Beat Los Suns four straight now, then do the Lake-os, then the Orlando-s …
I may dream.
Too many years I have seen Duncan and the Spurs come back on the Los Suns. Not this year; game three was the critical turning point.
The Dream is over.
Go, Los Suns, Go!
The Suns were/are magnificent.
Congratulations.
Ex-Spur Steve Kerr has done a great job.
Beware the One-Eyed Nash!
Anybody seen our former friend and troll exterminator Freepatriot?? Because it turns out JR Ewing Braden or something like that just hurled a perfect game for the Oakland Charlie Finleys. Golly, I wish our partner Freep would poke his head out of that turtle shell and join us!
Wonder if A-Rod knows who Braden is now?
PS The Yankees suck ;-)
No. A-Rod is Tiger Woods without the killer instinct. A-Rod like numbers are fine, but there is a reason Dan Marino ain’t Joe Montana. You gots to come up big when the whole wad is on the line. Even last year, which is the only time A-Rod did not completely choke and embarrass himself in the clutch, he was not exactly Reggie Jackson if you know what I mean. Karl Malone is the third leading scorer in NBA history; he was a nice player, but not even in the discussion for greatness, despite his prolific numbers. I saw him up close and personal over many years; he was very good, but Charles Barkley was tougher and better (he didn’t win a championship either). A-Rod isn’t even Barkley or Malone yet. A-Rod is a slightly better version of Rafael Palmiero; nice player, but…………
If you’re going to stick them with the name of a former owner, try the ‘Oakland Connie Macks’. (I understand people like the team.)
Finley was Mr. “Disco Demolition” night. Good enough for me.
Don’t know if there is O.T. in trash talk ..
