Must-See TV: House January 6 Committee Hearings Begin June 9 at 8:00 PM
[NB: check the byline, thanks. /~Rayne]
Schedule your evenings accordingly, people:
🗓️ Thursday, June 9th at 8:00pm
The Select Committee will hold a hearing to provide the American people with a summary of our findings about the coordinated, multi-step effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Apparently there are spiffy advisories with a blurb about the hearings’ subject making the rounds:

Squirrel away this link for live stream through the House J6 Committee’s website:
https://january6th.house.gov/news/watch-live
The folks at Just Security produced a primer on the hearings available at this link.
The content is structured into teams based on the efforts and outcomes certain groups of Trump supporters focused on in the run up to and through January 6.
At least 93 persons and organizations have been subpoenaed by the House J6 Committee to date. The hearings are working on the content produced by these subpoenas as well as other methods for obtaining evidence.
Last night CNN’s Anderson Cooper interviewed former Republican representative Denver Riggleman about the House J6 Committee’s work. It’s a +10:00 minute segment but worth your time.
A Republican with a background in national security and the military with experience in obtaining intelligence, Riggleman should be Mark Meadow’s nightmare. One might wonder if this interview was a last-ditch attempt to encourage Meadow’s full compliance with the committee’s subpoena because it sounds like Meadows is in the committee’s crosshairs. Riggleman is candid in this interview, calling the content he’s seen a horror.
Speaking of horror, Ginni Thomas is mentioned several times in this interview.
Former AG Bill Barr testified before the J6 committee today. He may have been asked about the proposed rejiggering of the Department of Justice before January 6 during this session.

Probably a last chance to buff his image and distance himself from the attack on the Capitol.
There are folks who should be squirming in Washington; there should be some preparing resignations, too.
But if the mass delusion has a stranglehold on them as well as a substantive portion of of the American right-wing, they may simply be preparing to do more damage to our democracy during the mid-term elections, and after depending on the election results.

I would even miss the NBA finals for this. Fortunately there is no scheduling conflict for that date.
Weather permitting, I may set up a screen and projector outdoors on my deck so friends can come over and watch it with me.
Nice. Technology has changed since the Watergate hearings!
No, not gonna miss the Finals for that.
Game 3 – Wednesday 6/8
Game 4 – Friday 6/9

Yes – typo. At least I got the day right!
GO DUBS!
lol
Thanks, I needed this. LOL
heh…I was suddenly worried something had already gone wrong! Immediately consulted calendar, and then NBA schedule. Whew!
[Can definitely empathize with typo’s.]
Enjoy your game
Enjoyed three quarters of a back and forth battle, and then boom – Celtics played a 4th quarter for the ages. Ouch.
Shooting 52% from 3-point range will win games every time…
And scoring 16 points in the 4th quarter will lose as often. It was a hell of a quarter.
My theory is that the Celtics rope-a-doped them, whether intentionally or not. The score graph shows that it was the long stretches of no scoring in both the 2nd and 4th quarters is that did Golden State in. I mean, they scored 70 points in the 1st and 3rd quarters, and 38 in the other two.
I’m not an X’s and O’s guy, so I have no idea if was an intentional strategy, but that was striking.
I heard the great Frank Maguire say all basketball games go in runs and that one of the coach’s jobs in a game is to find ways to make her/his team’s runs last and to stop the other team’s runs. The C’s have the offense to continue their runs and the defense to stop the other team’s runs. Their coach has been putting that in practice since December. Should be a good series.
Jalen Rose just made an interesting point, in that most of those fourth quarter threes were over the exhausted outstretched hand pf Steph Curry. They were targeting him for threes specifically.
Go Rangers!
LOL kind of — my projector screen predates the Watergate hearings, I think. It’s a hand-me-down from a friend, an old Da-Lite ‘Silver-lite’ from the 1950s. It works well with a digital projector I bought in summer of 2020 to screen movies with friends during the early pandemic. I just pop my Roku USB dongle into the projector and stream from YouTube assuming it will be uploaded to that platform.
Just pop some corn in the microwave, crack a few beers, and try to keep the hooting and hollering to a minimum so as not to upset my elderly neighbors.
Invite them over and tell them you’ll share your beer.
I predict that some of the loudest hoots on a night like this will come from the folks who can remember things like the McCarthy committee, the Church committee, My Lai, and yes, Watergate.
I watched part of the Watergate hearings in the main rotunda of MIT where they’d set up a projection TV. The technology was available then but has only now trickled down to the masses.
There was always a good crowd of people watching the Watergate hearings there, something I don’t believe will happen with the January 6 hearings, a characteristic of these atomized times.
Rooting for the Green Team I hope
Jaylon and Jason.
I’ve got a big church convention I can’t miss, that starts on Thursday night. Gotta stream the hearing after I get home.
You may have to find/have a real apse of judgment to sneak-watch.
“Father, forgive me, for I have streamed”?
If you don’t eat yer meat, you can’t have any pudding.
We are meeting in Metro KC, and the convention opens with an outdoor Kansas City BBQ dinner. There will be plenty of meat to be had.
Of course, depending on where the organizers get the BBQ, there may be holy wars between rival factions who believe their favorite is ordained by God and the rest are pretenders at best or heretics at worst.
OMG, don’t tell Jim White about the BBQ.
‘ How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat?’
Might have to buttress my defenses if I get caught.
You might, uhhh, spire to altar your testimony?
Altar? I’d be railed!
I’d rather have a belfry taught in front of me than a prefrontal lobotomy?
I’ll just have to cross that later.
you always nave more than you naught.
And you are a font of wisdom and fun.
Good night!
You may have to find/have a real apse of judgment to sneak-watch.

Thanks Rayne,
I’ll be watching one way or another.
Is there a way for bmaz to take his basketball talk elsewhere so that this hearing can be taken seriously?
admittedly, I’m not a sports fan – please don’t flame me,
– Rhonda
That’s on me – I kinda pre-hijacked this thread with a “Fitz”-ian basketball reference. Or was it Zed? That said, I believe that straying Off Topic, with some restraint, is a time honored tradition here and elseweb.
so: Go Dubs?!
I like the question mark, since Go Dubs made think of 43
You guys are making me want to watch the game :))) and widen my horizons.
I will try to remember to put up an alternate post for non-hearing discussion each night of the hearings.
I’d like to note that this thread was about TV viewing, and we were talking about TV viewing. I assume people have scroll function on their computers.
Oh man, are you seriously going to try your lawerly ju-ju to claim this post was about watching TV in general instead of the House J6 Committee’s televised hearings?
That’s it, I’m going to take over Trash Talk and cut off the bourbon!
Yup! Also gonna blame Punaise! I am an innocent person!
I do not think that word means what you think it means. *side eyeing you*
I do not feel seen!
That was some world-class reverse engineering by bmaz, I’d say…
Your assumption is correct, fair point :)
Waiting for the scroll function to be developed for my brain though.
Anyway, I mean it, enjoy the game, sorry if I’m a curmudgeon.
You guys all make me laugh and think so much, thanks!
Lol, no worries!
Since there are no worries, I shall be a curmudgeon again and also too shall be sorry about it – here goes:
I despise the phrase ‘no worries’
I do not give a damn.
Frankly? I don’t either.
You could at least say ‘enjoy your hearing’ since I sincerely offered you ‘enjoy your game’.
Totally agreeing with you there, HS. I remember first hearing this as some waiter/ress delivered my meal and I said “Thank you.”
“No worries” was the response. As if I had caused them some worry?
I might have considered “No tippie canoe, either.”
BTW, also agreeing that arguing about some tiddle-wink game in the middle of some erudite discussion – especially about a nave having ‘apses in judgement’ is inappropriate.
Yeah, we do not need your, or Holdingsteady’s, help. Neither of you are our content monitor nor tone police. We have talked sports here since day one. And will continue to. Take your “tiddlywinks” and run along, “nave”. Or did you mean “knave”?
And, by the way, “nave”, did you see how Nadal dominated in the French Open this morning? Are you ready for the Celtics/Warriors game tonight, “nave”?
As to “no worries”, lol, I tried to be nice. Guess that was not good enough for you persnickety internet content monitors. So sorry, have a nice day!
I think you’re correct to call my dislike of ‘no worries’ persnickety rather than curmudgeonly. I’ve used the term and my kids seem to use it – recently a neighbor said it about her dog and I love dogs but it was ambiguous and left me disliking the term since I didn’t know what she meant so I guess I had a bee in my bonnet. And she’s an awesome person.
Oh well, I’m bad at internet commentary and regret complaining about the term. Thanks for trying to be nice, bmaz.
Thanks rip, for understanding about the ambiguity of the term. A lot of people use it, and perhaps I was out of line to complain. All done now,
Bye
And dammit, Punaise started it!
my confession will never hold up on court.
Well, you could confess to Father Nadal in Cross Court.
Free throwin lines, eh?
“There are folks who should be squirming in Washington; there should be some preparing resignations, too.”
I wonder if any of them will be “jumping” out windows.
Merrick Garland “fears no person,” says legal scholar Norm Eisen — and he’s coming for Trump | Salon.com
“Based on the evidence we’ve seen so far, those hearings are going to be very dynamic. Undoubtedly, even with all the leaks, we’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg.”
“Resignations” makes sense only if it’s referring to current GOP members of Congress. While some employed by the previous administration are still working in Washington, their resignations from a think tank, lobbying firm or interest group, or news organization wouldn’t be so interesting.
The former guy is wailing about “counterprogramming” the hearings.
Pops Cheney, who as a former congressperson gets to visit the House floor, stopped in a few months ago to visit the committee and was introduced all around by Rep. Cheney. One of the committee’s “story blocks” will involve the legal role of the U.S. vice president, and Judge Luttig, author of the paper that provided Pence with arguments, is expected to testify.
It’s somewhere between possible and probable that former V.P.s Quayle, Gore, and Pop Cheney will be called. The weekend before the 6th, Pence consulted Quayle (who became an unlikely hero by saying very firmly that there were no options. None.)
Both Quayle and Gore had the unpleasant job of certifying the guys who beat them (a nice progression, Quayle to Gore; Gore to Chaney.) Quayle could also talk about the Pence call; Gore could say he begged Barbara Boxer and the Dem. congressperson whose name I can’t remember NOT to object to the Bush/Cheney certification.
Those three former V.P.s would also testify that nobody had erected gallows in 1992, 1996 or 2000, 2004 or 2008. That segues to “how did we get to this point” setting up the next story blocks.
If it is going to be tripe like that, even I will not bother to watch.
‘tripe…’
You are a righteous-minded, substantive attorney. The purpose is not to convince the already-repulsed (or the other end of the bell curve), but to show how horrible 1/6 was and how many moving pieces it involved.
And that this transcends partisanship. In a sense, Quayle, Gore and Pop Cheney would be standing for our history. Pop Cheney has actually spoken fondly of the Vice Presidency as employee of the legislative branch, not the executive, and how the VP’s paychecks are literally from Congress. Al Gore’s father was in the senate and I think one of their forefathers was also a VP. ,
Moreover, if Al Gore does go on, it’s a great reminder of Bush v. Gore.
Lol, what a bunch of shit, having Gore and Cheney “testify” accomplishes absolutely nothing whatsoever. Quayle is a very limited fact witness, at best. Ilf this is the kind of bogus theater they are ginning up, count me out.
Come on, bmaz. This isn’t about you and most of the kind of folks who frequent sites like this. It’s for the typically politically uninformed average American who needs to understand that in their lifetime the transition of power occurred even after a contested election (Gore) and after an attack on the country (Cheney) without an assault on the Capitol to obstruct the certification of election or with threats to the life of the Vice President. The average American needs to hear from both a Democratic and a Republican VP that what happened was grossly abnormal, unacceptable, and a threat to the country; it needs to become part of Congressional record.
Take a look at what’s playing out in the right-wing and its media ecosphere: they trying to call the committee and its hearings a coup, they’re even trying to blame the J6 attack on Antifa even after all this time. The J6 committee will have to provide an education to the average American about what really happened including the background.
You know this. Please think about that audience and what they need to fully understand the magnitude of the crimes.
Fuck. I just wrote a post, didn’t I.
Lol, I don’t care putting on a dog and pony show with Chehey and Gore is a ridiculous idea and a waste of precious hearing time. If people are so stupid and uninformed as to not understand the past power transfers, this nonsense will not help them. Spend time on the actual facts, not some 6th grade level bullshit.
If only we didn’t live in a 6th grade level world. Trump wouldn’t have had a chance back in 2016 if we didn’t.
I’ll give you a dollar… ;D

Yeah, you don’t use the military to pull off your coup, you get the Supreme Court to say “Stop counting votes” to successfully pull off your coup. It makes it look totally legit!

[Kenneth CHESEBRO’s 12/13/20 “‘President of the Senate’ strategy” memo.]
Talk about hiding your light under a bushel basket !! Why on Earth is this not on a major network? What good is this on some obscure link?? The people who NEED to see it will never look for it, much less find it.
In 1973, from May 17 to November 15, the Watergate hearings were covered gavel to gavel on television and NPR all day long. Then in the evening, Americans all over the country tuned in for the 8 PM ET taped rebroadcast, replayed every evening for those who worked during the day.
I am pissed. The only people who will watch this are the political junkies like Us.
Earlier this morning I read that not only will CNN show the first hearing live but ABC has decided to, also. After reading the above post I tried and failed to find the source of this information.
I suspect that most news channels will carry it live, like they did when the police officers who were present that day testified. And for such high profile events, even newspapers like WaPo usually carry a live stream. The link Rayne provided may be a “just in case”, or possibly one untainted by commentary/commercials, etc.

The House J6 streaming link is definitely my failover. I’m counting on YouTube stream myself.
The one cable network which is most likely to not cover or offer crappy coverage is of course Fox News. Wouldn’t want to cut into Cucker Tarlson’s slot.
This was the formal announcement. The networks could begin to schedule once they had the announcement. In late April the House J6 had tentatively planned on June 9 to begin hearings but it wasn’t firmed up and may still be a bit tenuous.
I’m looking forward to hearing J. Michael Luttig in particular.
I’m looking forward to the summary of the Secret Service actions & observations around Pence & Trump throughout the day.
I’m looking forward to a summary of those actions in the days and weeks leading up to Jan 6 2021 from the preceding November.
“But if the mass delusion has a stranglehold on them as well as a substantive portion of the American right-wing, they may simply be preparing to do more damage to our democracy during the mid-term elections, and after depending on the election results.”
When a delusion is shared by sufficient numbers it becomes an Article of Faith.
Thank you Rayne.
Wow – Peter Navarro might consider using CBD gummy bears.
Rayne: One might wonder if this interview was a last-ditch attempt to encourage Meadow’s full compliance with the committee’s subpoena because it sounds like Meadows is in the committee’s crosshairs.
READ: The Meadows text messages from January 6 https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/02/politics/read-mark-meadows-texts-january-6-capitol-riot/index.html Thu June 2, 2022
We’ve known since before Meadows released those 2319 texts last December he was in deep. Meadows’ ongoing refusal to comply with the House J6 committee’s subpoena still looks bad, though; why would he risk a second obstruction charge?
One text from that article I found interesting was actually from 1/5/21 from MT Greene to Meadows. It mentions both Linsey Graham and Trump:
1/5/21 2:30 PM GREENE to MEADOWS: Last night Sen Graham told me that if I found 100 names of dead voters in GA that he would object. I have 100 dead voters names!! [] Tell President Trump!
“Last night” [being 1/4/21], in EASTMAN emails:
Interesting:
“From” is redacted; “To” OTHERS; “intended audience” [PENCE?]
From: https://twitter.com/kyledcheney/status/1530007020509745152 10:04 PM · May 26, 2022
That almost sounds like makework, assigned by Graham.
But…he also made at least one call to Georgia election officials, although as an attorney was presumably more oblique than Trump’s ‘perfect call’.
This subplot will appear again in the mushrooming Georgia investigation.
Rayne: But if the mass delusion has a stranglehold on them as well as a substantive portion of of the American right-wing, they may simply be preparing to do more damage to our democracy during the mid-term elections, and after depending on the election results.
I don’t think there’s any “IF” about it.

‘It’s going to be an army’: Tapes reveal GOP plan to contest elections
Placing operatives as poll workers and building a “hotline” to friendly attorneys are among the strategies to be deployed in Michigan and other swing states.
https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/01/gop-contest-elections-tapes-00035758 6/1/22
Yes and no — some of this is business as usual for the GOP. They’re allocating more resources to it when they establish physical “community centers” like those reported in that second piece by POLITICO. It’s hardly a surprise they’re going after Democratic strongholds in Michigan because they’ve always done so to some degree. They don’t have a problem with Democratic voters in targeted areas knowing about it right now because they want to demoralize and discourage turnout.
If anything it’s a good indicator they’re worried.
Yes, I agree that it shows they’re worried.
Yes, and thanks for the reassurance on this, Rayne and harpie. As I watch my beloved Michigan from afar I sometimes forget that national reporters are also watching from afar, and don’t really know the long history of these battles in the state.
The counties where my family has a footprint, Benzie and Washtenaw, are disparate and in many ways not reflective of the state as a whole, although Michigan is a true patchwork state made of radically disparate counties/communities. Since the deVos family takeover those differences have been increasingly weaponized for the sake of right-wing victories, with people like J Granholm trying to stand up and hold the state for something other than a Hillsdale, dominionist future. Glad to know someone(s) else is paying attention of such a high caliber.
The establishment of the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) through a 2018 ballot initiative has been another bright spot for the state. MIGOP state legislators have repeatedly tried to undermine this commission, but the state’s supreme court has upheld the voters’ decision to add the state’s constitution ensuring redistricting would not skew hard right as it did in 2010. (The composition of the current MI state supreme court has also been a bright spot — not as hard right as it was a handful of years ago.)
With the more neutral redistricting, the MIGOP is very concerned about districts which have both shifted somewhat left and have been changed a bit by the redistricting process. Predictably, it will be the area between Detroit to the south and Flint to the north which will be most sensitive, and MIGOP’s activities reflect this. The two seats I’m most worried about are Dan Kildee’s and Elissa Slotkin’s — they could use some financial love for their campaigns.

Hey harpie — I wonder if we need a separate document as a repository for folks who weren’t in the conspiracy/ies but who could accurately see what was coming? Congress needs to deal with fixing the J6 security failures after all. This tweet thread was particularly accurate.
I’ve never seen that thread…wow!
That might be a good idea…do you know of others, in particular?
Not off the top of my head but then I wasn’t paying attention as I should have been. I think Jim Stewart who’s been booted from Twitter was another person who saw the potential for trouble; I recall him saying no one on the left should go to DC on January 6 but I can’t recall if he gave specific reasons why they shouldn’t go. I’m sure there were more out there who warned others; did they do so because they saw evidence of planning?
I’ll try to go through my docs from that time period…also, maybe some comment threads…might come up with something.
I found one thing from the TL so far. The comment is in moderation at the end of this section…Considering “winter palace” and PB Seditious Conspiracy indictment, maybe we should concentrate our thoughts a bit on 12/30/20 and 12/31 20, and get a clean update on that time period.
Maybe we will soon be zeroing in on
BANNON, STONE and FLYNN.

[captions from STONE’s VIDEO]: [DATE???] [Maybe 12/30 or 12/31/20?]
Yeah, that’s exactly who I was thinking of, spelled his name wrong. Perfect example, too, of why every online resource which may have future value should be archived in Wayback Machine. Here’s the archived link:

PERFECT! Thanks! [I’m glad I transcribed the STONE VIDEO at the time.]
So, see the next tweet in that thread, about Jason SULLIVAN?
Look what’s now on the TL:
12/30/20 [Jason SULLIVAN] a onetime aide to Roger J. Stone Jr. told Trump backers to make lawmakers meeting to finalize the 2020 election results feel that “people are breathing down their necks.”
In Conference Call Before Riot, a Plea to ‘Descend on the Capitol’ Days before Jan. 6 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/12/us/politics/jan-6-capitol-riot-sullivan-trump.html Alan Feuer April 12, 2022
Something else I didn’t copy at the time-
SHOULD be at the top of the Stewartson THREAD:
Also, I have to remember that tweet time-stamps for me are always in Eastern Time Zone. [That one in the archive has a 12/31/20 time stamp]

I expect the Supreme Court will release their ruling overturning Roe v. Wade on the day the January 6th Committee broadcast begins.
That’s my fear as well, though the fury over that decision will have consequences at the polls in November just as the hearings should.
No politics here, just calling ‘balls and strikes’. /s
I wonder if Ginni [SCOTUS Spouse] THOMAS and
her “best friend” Clarence [“impartiality might reasonably be questioned”] THOMAS
might have an interest in when that decision is released.
