DNC Convention 2024: Day 3

[NB: check the byline, thanks. /~Rayne]

Welcome to Day 3 of Democratic National Committee Convention 2024.

The convention has an umbrella theme, “For the People, For Our Future,” with each successive day having a subset theme.

Day 1 — “For the People” — Joe Biden, keynote speaker

Day 2 — “A Bold Vision for America’s Future’ — Barack Obama, keynote speaker

Day 3 — “A Fight for Our Freedoms” — Tim Walz, keynote speaker <<– YOU ARE HERE

Day 4 — “For Our Future” — Kamala Harris, keynote speaker

Philip Elliot at TIME suggests tonight’s programming will be white man dense because white men were a key voting block which helped Biden win over Trump in 2020 and are still a critical variable in 2024.

Given how often minority groups and women have historically been given short shrift, this approach feels uncomfortable. But if the Democratic Party is to crush Trump and the GOP, no voting bloc should go without outreach, including the Never-Trumpers.

Holy madre de Dios, Olivia Troye brought the heat tonight. That’s going to leave a massive scorch mark on Donald’s ass.

Blue dress was a nice touch. This convention has been full of nice touches. I almost forgot what a presidential election campaign in tune with current trends and still-relevant best practices would look like.

I wondered about Stephanie Grisham — isn’t she the one who was in charge of the inaugural committee? TBH, I was a bit offended she was invited to speak at the DNC.

        • SteveBev says:

The inaugural committee was a different Stephanie [Winston Wolkoff a longtime friend of Melania.]
Grisham’s only connection to that scandal was, I believe, as Melania’s press agent, to issue Melania’s butt covering denials when the scandal broke.

        • SteveBev says:

Platforming people who turned on Trump is always going to be somewhat uncomfortable, but to give Grisham her due she did the right thing after J6, and has put herself out there repeatedly, so deserves credit for that.
Cohen could be more charitable, bearing in mind his own journey from the dark side, IMHO

          SteveBev @ 10:34

Certainly Cohen could have been more charitable as his journey from the dark side started in 2017 and Grisham started on 1/6/21, so he has 4-year jump on that transition. Plus he did get convicted, testitifed truthfully to the House Oversight Committee (his 2nd testimony to Congress, the first one being less than truthful), served time, got out early for covid, was thrown back in jail because he published his first book, and served as a key witness to the only criminal trial resulting in a conviction. So I understand his lack of charity. Stephanie is a valued and frequent guest on MSNBC, as are all never-Trumpers regardless of their level of actual remorse…and now elevated in status because of her speech to the DNC yesterday.

Andy Kim reminds me of this poem by Wislawa Szymborska: After every war, someone has to clean up https://www.loc.gov/programs/poetry-and-literature/poet-laureate/poet-laureate-projects/poetry-180/all-poems/item/poetry-180-141/the-end-and-the-beginning/

Andy Kim talked about grabbing a garbage bag to clean up the mess left by the insurrectionists after January 6. He didn’t mention he cleaned up human feces those monsters left on the floor of the people’s House. I am still so angry about this.

Me too, Rayne. I’ve shut down a couple of mouthy insurrection lovers by mentioning this little tidbit. The image of Andy Kim cleaning filth perfectly captures the asymmetry of that day.

Cleaning up the aftermath is a profoundly feminine role. And Andy Kim is a guy. Maybe there is hope for the future.

Cleaning up the aftermath has also been the province of people of color. It’s time to elect people who can see the prospective mess before one is made in order to avoid them.

Could you point to a reference where is the human feces mentioned? I looked up ‘Andy Kim Capitol feces’ on a search engine and found pictures of him cleaning garbage, but couldn’t find mentions of feces.

It’s 400 am-ish here and I am up only up long enough to shut a window. I will look later today — the word/phrase may not be “human feces” but similar.

If a major speaker brings up expanding the courts at the convention, I won’t complain for the next six months.

They’ve been surprising me by not making the typical grievous mistakes national Dems tend to do. They didn’t follow their worst instincts to try and do a mini open convention, Kamala picked Waltz instead of Shapiro, and they aren’t playing the NYTs and WaPo’s game which is obviously driving them nuts.

    Keep it up!

Clinton ran too long. He should take a lesson from Michele Obama on this stuff.
That Lt. Gov. of GA, Duncan?, was really good. Paraphrasing: no one here needs me to tell them not to vote for Trump. I’m talking to millions of Republicans and Independents.

    John Legend and Sheila E!!!!!

Walz is really good at this speechifying thing.

But he delivered THE FACT of the whole Convention:

“Since the end of the Cold War in 1989, America has created about 51 million new jobs. The score is Dems 50, GOP 1. If people ever figure out that all Republicans ever do is enrich themselves, they’ll never win another election.”
