DNC Convention 2024: Day 3

[NB: check the byline, thanks. /~Rayne]

Welcome to Day 3 of Democratic National Committee Convention 2024.

The convention has an umbrella theme, “For the People, For Our Future,” with each successive day having a subset theme.

Day 1 — “For the People” — Joe Biden, keynote speaker

Day 2 — “A Bold Vision for America’s Future’ — Barack Obama, keynote speaker

Day 3 — “A Fight for Our Freedoms” — Tim Walz, keynote speaker <<– YOU ARE HERE

Day 4 — “For Our Future” — Kamala Harris, keynote speaker

Philip Elliot at TIME suggests tonight’s programming will be white man dense because white men were a key voting block which helped Biden win over Trump in 2020 and are still a critical variable in 2024.

Given how often minority groups and women have historically been given short shrift, this approach feels uncomfortable. But if the Democratic Party is to crush Trump and the GOP, no voting bloc should go without outreach, including the Never-Trumpers.

  1. Rayne says:

Holy madre de Dios, Olivia Troye brought the heat tonight. That’s going to leave a massive scorch mark on Donald’s ass.

    • CaptainCondorcet says:

Blue dress was a nice touch. This convention has been full of nice touches. I almost forgot what a presidential election campaign in tune with current trends and still-relevant best practices would look like.

      • Tracy Lynn says:

I wondered about Stephanie Grisham — isn’t she the one who was in charge of the inaugural committee? TBH, I was a bit offended she was invited to speak at the DNC.

        • SteveBev says:

The inaugural committee was a different Stephanie [Winston Wolkoff a longtime friend of Melania.]
Grisham’s only connection to that scandal was, I believe, as Melania’s press agent, to issue Melania’s butt covering denials when the scandal broke.

        • SteveBev says:

Platforming people who turned on Trump is always going to be somewhat uncomfortable, but to give Grisham her due she did the right thing after J6, and has put herself out there repeatedly, so deserves credit for that.
Cohen could be more charitable, bearing in mind his own journey from the dark side, IMHO

        • Matt___B says:

          SteveBev @ 10:34

Certainly Cohen could have been more charitable as his journey from the dark side started in 2017 and Grisham started on 1/6/21, so he has 4-year jump on that transition. Plus he did get convicted, testitifed truthfully to the House Oversight Committee (his 2nd testimony to Congress, the first one being less than truthful), served time, got out early for covid, was thrown back in jail because he published his first book, and served as a key witness to the only criminal trial resulting in a conviction. So I understand his lack of charity. Stephanie is a valued and frequent guest on MSNBC, as are all never-Trumpers regardless of their level of actual remorse…and now elevated in status because of her speech to the DNC yesterday.

Ah yes, that’s it. Stephanie Winston Wolkoff was Melania’s pal. Thanks!

  2. Rayne says:

    Laura Helmuth @[email protected]

Andy Kim reminds me of this poem by Wislawa Szymborska: After every war, someone has to clean up https://www.loc.gov/programs/poetry-and-literature/poet-laureate/poet-laureate-projects/poetry-180/all-poems/item/poetry-180-141/the-end-and-the-beginning/

    Aug 21, 2024, 08:48 PM

Andy Kim talked about grabbing a garbage bag to clean up the mess left by the insurrectionists after January 6. He didn’t mention he cleaned up human feces those monsters left on the floor of the people’s House. I am still so angry about this.

    • LeftsidePortland says:

Me too, Rayne. I’ve shut down a couple of mouthy insurrection lovers by mentioning this little tidbit. The image of Andy Kim cleaning filth perfectly captures the asymmetry of that day.

    • Ebenezer Scrooge says:

Cleaning up the aftermath is a profoundly feminine role. And Andy Kim is a guy. Maybe there is hope for the future.

      • Rayne says:

Cleaning up the aftermath has also been the province of people of color. It’s time to elect people who can see the prospective mess before one is made in order to avoid them.

    • Ewan Woodsend says:

Could you point to a reference where is the human feces mentioned? I looked up ‘Andy Kim Capitol feces’ on a search engine and found pictures of him cleaning garbage, but couldn’t find mentions of feces.

      • Rayne says:

It’s 400 am-ish here and I am up only up long enough to shut a window. I will look later today — the word/phrase may not be “human feces” but similar.

      • DannyBurnt says:

It’s discussed in the House Judiciary Committee materials supporting Trump’s 2nd impeachment, which includes references/citations: “Insurrectionists also severely damaged the building itself. They left bullet marks in the building walls, looted art, destroyed monuments, including a commemorative display honoring late congressman John Lewis, smeared their feces in several hallways, and fatally injured a Capitol Police officer (48). Several brandished the Confederate battle flag and extremist paraphernalia (49).” Page 12 of https://int.nyt.com/data/documenttools/jan/904d70175a988bd0/full.pdf

        • Rayne says:

Thank you for that, much appreciated.

In response to Ewan Woodsend: I’ve looked through a dozen news articles this morning and can’t find what I’m looking for. I know what I read pre-dated the House Judiciary Committee materials cited above. In hindsight I suspect it was something I read on Twitter early after January 6 but I no longer use the dead bird app and I can’t be certain what I read would still be there.

    • dimmsdale says:

I’m not ordinarily a petty person (except for, well, sometimes) but I keep hoping the feds are going to do DNA matching to find out whose feces those were–those particular perps need to be commemorated in appropriate fashion, I think. They left their feces in MY house, and I don’t appreciate that.

  3. -mamake- says:

I am not seeing where to watch the speakers like Olivia Troye and othes mentioned on this post. i’m on C-Span. So are there other stages…?

    • Tracy Lynn says:

I looked as well, but I suspect we won’t be able to see them until their speeches get parsed on the socials, since we didn’t see them live.

    • Rayne says:

No. The speakers all appear sequentially. You missed her remarks between 7 and 8 pm CDT. I don’t know what CSPAN is doing about the individual speeches. If they have the entire event in one video you’ll have to narrow down to that chronological window.

      • John Paul Jones says:

What I’ve been doing is simply typing in:

        c-span dnc [name]

and several potential videos will pop up. Usually I click on the one that says “Full remarks”. If that ain’t there, then I just click until it looks like the one I want.

        • Rayne says:

But they have to be tagged and archived already to do that. If the person literally just finished speaking it may be a bit before the content is available on C-SPAN as a separate video.

    • Peterr says:

      No other stages.

Troye spoke almost two hours ago. The times above are Central Time, which may be confusing some folks.

    • -mamake- says:

Sorry, what I mean is are there concurrent events in different locations? I’ve been on the road so have only watched after the fact online this AM – catching up.

    • -mamake- says:

Thanks, Rayne and Peterr. I’ll find it when posted online.
And thank you for posting these daily schedule and links.

      • originalK says:

On the youtube livestreams, you can just pull the slider back in time, to watch from the beginning or see the speakers you missed. It looks like Olivia Troye is at about the half-way mark back (2 hours ago).

  4. PhoneInducedPinkEye says:

If a major speaker brings up expanding the courts at the convention, I won’t complain for the next six months.

They’ve been surprising me by not making the typical grievous mistakes national Dems tend to do. They didn’t follow their worst instincts to try and do a mini open convention, Kamala picked Waltz instead of Shapiro, and they aren’t playing the NYTs and WaPo’s game which is obviously driving them nuts.

    Keep it up!

  5. klynn says:

Hope and Guss Walz made the night!

Nothing reflects your character more than your kids standing up and shouting, “I love you Dad! That’s MY Dad!”

  6. Ed Walker says:

Clinton ran too long. He should take a lesson from Michele Obama on this stuff.
That Lt. Gov. of GA, Duncan?, was really good. Paraphrasing: no one here needs me to tell them not to vote for Trump. I’m talking to millions of Republicans and Independents.

    John Legend and Sheila E!!!!!

Walz is really good at this speechifying thing.

    • klynn says:

But he delivered THE FACT of the whole Convention:

“Since the end of the Cold War in 1989, America has created about 51 million new jobs. The score is Dems 50, GOP 1. If people ever figure out that all Republicans ever do is enrich themselves, they’ll never win another election.”

      • Rayne says:

Thank you for going there. I admit to biting my tongue and snickering as the croupier must have been after handing Captain Renault his winnings at Casablanca.

    • wetzel-rhymes-with says:

With Bill Clinton, I am always STFU from the start. I hate to say it. I worked hard for Jerry Brown, who was his somewhat meaningful opponent for about two months during primary season in 1992. For the rest of my life “I told you so”. We could have had a Family Bill of Rights with shelter, health care and food. Instead we ended welfare as we know it. Bill Clinton also failed his marriage in front of the world because he’s actually an Arkansas Snopes who grifted Hillary into marrying his trashy sex-addicted ass. He’ll always be talking “too long”, a pseudo-intellectual and pseudo-leader showing off his dreamwork of narcissistic corruption, a lubricious Southern narcissist loved for his verbal abilities, who rose in politics due to having learned a mnemonic trick for remembering names to convince people he actually gave a crap about them (making every name into a visual image, I’m sure).

In 1992, after the Rodney King Riots, everyone went with the sane, stable moderate, but I think we’ll have riots in America for the rest of our lives because we elected that piss-ant Bill Clinton who “ended welfare as we know it” and so anyone who can’t “play by the rules” just needs incarceration, stoning or you can walk right past. F#ck you, Bill Clinton.

      • Rayne says:

This thread is about the convention, not your decades-old beef about Bill Clinton. You could have published just the first sentence.

  7. Critter7 says:

I like the way the Dems are highlighting Joy as a political emotion, as in Doug Emhoff calling his wife a “joyful warrior”, Tim Walz thanking the crowd “for bringing the joy to this fight”, and other mentions by other speakers.

Joy is a great counter to the dour and dystopian Trumpian world view.

Also a good contrast to the most pathetic Republican talking point yet: The mocking of Kamala’s laugh. So the Trumpers, apparently, they don’t like laughter? Maybe so – has anyone ever seen Trump actually laugh? I have not. So if their cult leader doesn’t do it, they don’t like it.

I feel joy that the political dam seems to have broken, and so much optimism for the future is pouring out. Thank you, Dems. And please keep it up.

    • Doctor Cyclops says:

This puts me in mind of the last scene in “The Uninvited,” when the ghost recoils from the sound of Ray Milland’s laughter. “I should think you’d be on your way now, Mary Meredith. We’re not frightened of you anymore. From now on this house is for the living.”

    • Greg Hunter says:

When I watch this convention I see a lot of linkages that would trigger republican or independent leaning voters toward the Joy of the Party. I love that they are using this feeling as it is really our temperament. We really believed that Republicans loved our Country enough not to wreck it but it is evident they want a dictator to usher in Christian Nationalism.

The Republicans have recently used the implication of sex “trafficking” as a hook to draw liberals into this topic. When I hear Joy, I immediately thought of this overlooked movie that has had a resurgence on HBO. Joy is the hero of QVC and her story is a good one with cross over appeal. It is trending upwards on IMDB.

Just read a report about Oprah’s surprise visit last night at DNC on Foxnews. Seemed accurate and reasonably nonpartisan; didn’t fact check but interesting to know Oprah once considered tfg might want to run for potus, back in the day, long B4 his golden escalator glissade. Last night’s performance sure clarified her current feelings for those who watched it. Then I scrolled down to read comments. I’ve never done that before. Had no idea the level of hatred, vitriol, mindless Magat misinformation and nonsense about democrat values&policies, wokeism rants and just plain cultish following. My gawd, so much for helping thy neighbor when their house is burning down. I truly believe these freaks would shoot you for trespassing when they see you’re from the blue/purple house next door. You know, the neighbors who aren’t part of their church group…the ones probly trying to steal their duck dynasty hat, signed Rush portrait, box of frozen trump steaks, etc. How do we moderates deal with THAT?

    • Magnet48 says:

I’m trying to figure that one out myself. More than 30 years ago I married a truly decent man. He was a republican but I always felt that he had the heart of a democrat. The years have taken a toll on his health & worn him down to become very vulnerable to MAGA rhetoric. He was able to keep his cool with Biden as the nominee but Kamala has unleashed the anger. Apparently he really resents that we want to fulfill the promise of America & I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around that. I had convinced myself that the outrageous MAGA comments on ‘X’ were coming from trolls but now I have it in my own house.

      • GSSH-FullyReduced says:

        So sorry Magnet.
Nice recent article about getting more conservative as we age:
        https://news.northeastern.edu/2023/01/25/millenials-age-conservative/
But like Oprah said last night about having adult discussions about politics; “It’s complicated”.
Not that it explains what’s going-on with your 30yrs of marriage or how your husband is seemingly morphing into a magat. Maybe he’s pissed that the red tide is ebbing and scared the blue flood will drown-out legit republican values&policies? I mean, geez, between Michelle, Pete, Oprah and Tim’s performances the past 3 nights he might need a life jacket.

  10. synergies says:

I haven’t watched a convention in a while. Too busy at 73 keeping up with the bills. Had the time this time. What an incredible convention. We’ve finally gotten to the point of having the younger gens there & involved. The speakers; Jeremy Raskin, Jasmine Crockett and others! I’m super impressed. Relayed to the younger gens, this is HUGE!
I hope I’m not off topic, D N C. I apologize if so just delete this part of my comment. I’ve been around a while. When I see something I’ve NEVER seen before… I get Jackie Rosen’s emails. James Carville is involved in her campaign. Most emails are from him. Recently he sent an email with a header; “I’m pulling my hair out…” How many younger people even know who he is? That’s funny?” Jackie’s opponent is disfigured.
8-19-2024 an email, titled “Did you see our rally in Las Vegas?” was sent with a GIF of Kamala at a rally. I’m not tech oriented so the only thing I know is I’ll forward the email to you at emptywheel with the subject “Rosen GIF.” The GIF shows Kamala, I think sped up, purportedly saying, “We will reelect Jackie Rosen to the United States Senate” except it doesn’t seem to match. The HUGE problem in the GIF, beyond the speed of & “dialogue,” is in the left part of the video above Kamala’s arm, in the crowd background is a bit blurred, black man’s head torso image. As the video proceeds his eyes as he blinks goes from a regular look to a GLAZE. Like someone who has just died eyes glazing over. The absurdity. James Carville is insane! I think he needs to be sanctioned. Barred actually. I hope the Kamala campaign calls him out for it.
It’s one of the most grotesque unhinged things I’ve EVER seen. Nauseating!

Last night my spouse walked in during Gonell’s remarks, found me sobbing into paper towels. He didn’t say a word to me and kept a wide berth the rest of the night. Yeah. I really didn’t need to watch it live.

        • Rayne says:

Thanks, harpie, same to you. :-)

I can’t watch live tonight either, at least not a big swath of it. The party is going hard after effective law enforcement and gun violence. Guess I’ll be watching my social media feed for feedback nuggets.

FINALLY. The DNC *just* published the lineup for tonight’s programming.

P!NK will be the musical performer. Oh please, U + Ur Hand for DJT and JDV.

Going to be a big night for Michigan and North Carolina. Big Gretch will be a speaker and Roy Cooper speaks ahead of Harris.

ADDER: The Chicks will perform shortly after 8:00 PM CT and P!NK will perform closer to 8:30 PM if everybody stays on schedule. *fingers crossed*
