Week 16 Trash Talk

Hey, turns out there is actual NFL football on today. Who knew? The early game is on the NFL Network, and features the Eagles at the dysfunctional Redskins. Not long ago, the Eagles had the best record in the league, now they don’t even control their own playoff destiny. So they have to beat the Eagles today and Giants next week and hope for some help. RGIIIis back at QB for Washington, but it is hard to see the Eagles losing here. The later game is on CBS and has the Bolts at the Niners. San Diego still has some life left in them, the Niners not so much.

On Sunday, the Lions are at the Bears, and should have no issue there. Cutler has been benched in favor of Jimmy Clausen. It has gotten so bad that the Bears are talking bout offering a high draft pick along with Cutler to get another team interested enough to take Cutler. Ooof.

The Chiefs at Steelers should be a decent game, as should Colts at Cowboys and Broncos at Bengals. The supposedly marquee matchup is the Seahawks at Cardinals. The winner will almost certainly win the NFC West and may well have home field advantage for the playoffs. But I say “supposedly” because it is hard to imagine how the Cardinals are going to find enough offense to hang with the Squawks. Drew Stanton is still out and Ryan Lindley will be starting. Lindley is really a quality kid, but the Legion of Boom is probably going to light him up. Hope springs eternal here for some kind of miracle game from the Cards, but the odds of that are effectively zero.

The rest of the games just aren’t that interesting, especially considering how late in the season it is.

Hawks-Cardinals match up is marquee here in the Seattle area! We are having so much fun having a top-tier team after all these years. :) (from long time lurker in Puget Sound area)

  2. dakine01 says:

Enjoying seeing the start of the Kentucky/UCLA game this afternoon with the early score of KY 16 UCLA 0 after 4 + minutes.

  3. phred says:

Ummm, bmaz, “not that interesting” NEVER applies to the Packers. Just sayin’.
    .
And, for all your moaning about that Cards, do I really need to remind you that they won last week? Admittedly, against the Rams, but still… I listened to your belly aching and it cost me 8 points in my pool. I’m picking the pretty red birds over the watery ones this week, no matter how morose you choose to be ; p

  4. jo6pac says:

Go 9ers but I think SD has this in the bag. Go JH and take greg roman with you.

•dakine01, great list and ryan leaf is probably the most rested;)

  5. Lois says:

Oh and why the heck is NFL network calling today’s games “Thursday Night Football – Sarurday Edition”!?!?

  6. scribe says:

the 506 has f’d me again, so I get the crappy 2nd, 3rd and 4th level games.
    .
    Humbug.
    .
I think I’ll trim the tree tomorrow, assuming I can find one.
    .
I think the League has adjusted to the Iggles and figured out that getting a 3 and out with Sanchize is not as hard as previously thought. Doing that a couple times in the first half, and the Iggle D is puking its guts out with exhaustion by halftime.

  7. emptywheel says:

Let it be noted that in the year of the lord 2014, bmaz’ hapless home team and emptywheel’s hapless team were first and second to clinch playoff berths in the NFC.

    Go figure.

      • bmaz says:

Listen sister, the Cards have no QB, their running game sucks, Larry Fitzgerald is still hurting a little ad the Bidwells still own the team. Doomed I tell ya!!

        • phred says:

Ah, now that was what I was waiting for!
          .
Not to worry EW, I had every confidence in bmaz to rise to the occasion ; )

      • emptywheel says:

First you listen to bmaz’ bellyaching and now you doubt that it’ll continue?

        Girl, you feeling alright?

    • What Constitution? says:

The problem with this is that it pretty much uses up a huge chunk of allotted miracles, and the problem with that is it further reduces the likelihood of a prosecution of Dick Cheney and John Yoo for torture. Guess we’ll have to rely upon some of our elected or Artcle III officials adhering to their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Why is it I’d feel much better if your teams were in their customary positions at this time?

  8. bloopie2 says:

This long-suffering Cleveland Browns fan who lives in Connecticut and is therefore forced to watch the Jets and Giants lose each weekend or the God I Hate Them Patriots win each weekend is blessed to have two tech-savvy offspring home this weekend for Christmas who will stream me illegally but welcomely nonetheless that game in which the awesome Football J attempts to rise beyond his twenty two year old mentality being only four years removed from his last high school football game to spite or spit in the face of the oft admired Newton who truly is not up to his namesake’s achievements in the realm of moving objects through the air so as to defeat with inimitable pleasure the doubters of his efficacy who will rely on the Third Law For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction to justify their argument that Johnny must fail and thus the Brownies are consigned to their everlasting horror and dammit I’ve lost the thread of this and am so jealous of those Greeks who could string together the paragraph length simile at the drop of a καπέλο ah well all is good since the kids are home for the holidays God bless them and God has blessed the undeserving me with them thank you.

    • bmaz says:

Cause it is Christmas and all, Ima gonna leave these here for you…….
      .
Just in case you need them in a future paragraph! My tech savvy child will be back home tonight after having gone snowboarding in Breckenridge for a week after finals were over. I used to have that kind of fun. Now I get to stay at home with the dog. Not sure I totally approve of this getting old thing.

    • phred says:

Merry Christmas bloopie2 and have a wonderful holiday with your family! After that, a Browns victory is a minor trinket at the bottom of the stocking ; ) Which may be just as well, since, uh, well, they are the Browns after all ; )
      .
And bmaz, glad to hear your well rested offspring is headed home after their semester of hard work. Hope you have a delightful holiday, too, but would like to point out… Weren’t you just a couple of comments above selling the virtues of being properly looked after by a pup? Just sayin’ that the getting old thing may have some benefits… ; )

    • emptywheel says:

Glad the kids are home for the holidays.

Are you one of those Brownies disapora that get a call every week from some nut screaming into the phone “Hey, bloopie2, Browns Backers here! We’re all watching the game at….”?

Cause those Browns Backers are creepy.

  9. phred says:

bmaz, nice nutcracker : ) Just thought I would mention that I told the Mr. about your unhappiness with his decision to follow EW on Twitter, but not you. He has amended his ways and now dutifully checks up on you, too. Thought you would like to know that he was pleased as punch to see your nutcracker properly attired for the (football) season ; )

    • bmaz says:

Uh, yeah, tell him good luck with that!
      .
Cheesehead Nutcracker is about to go walkabout in my neighborhood. The neighbors all think I am nuts, but they do so love the dog and the Mrs.
      .
      Yeah, I know, go figure.

  10. phred says:

Just don’t yank too hard on the nutcracker’s leash when he gets too close to the neighbor’s flower bed, the hat might topple off an crush a chipmunk ; )

    • phred says:

Thanks ros! Sorry ’bout your Niners, though…
      .
Really glad to see you, since I’m pretty sure the Pack has won every time you’ve cheered for Team phred ; )

    • phred says:

And rosalind does it again! Woot!
      .
So, ummm, will you pull for team phred again next week??? I promise it will be a sekrit just between you and me… EW won’t need to know… ; )

        • phred says:

Why EW, are the Bears getting to you??? You are sounding a little desperate… ; )
          .
And confused… it is the Lombardi TROPHY that belongs in Lambeau ; )

        • bmaz says:

I DO NOT accept your wrongful appropriation of the Lombardi moniker.
          .
This shit is simply heresy. And it will NOT stand. Not now. Not ever. Not on The Tundra. And not at Lambeau.
          .
Team Rosalind, Phred and Bmaz forbid it. Take yer kittens home.

        • emptywheel says:

It’s not my appropriation. Joe was born into it.

He’s already won grand-dad’s trophy once. What better way to move towards doing it again than on grand-dad’s old stomping ground?

  11. jo6pac says:

9ers once again doing what the coaching does best. SD make changes at the half to shutdown the run and on the other side the same stupid play calling. I do hope after the last game of the season the entire Offensive side of the 9ers are gone.

  12. scribe says:

Boy oh boy oh boy did Cheatin’ Bill and Biebs throw a stinker during the first half or what? Kinda surprised they pulled out a win over what may have been Fat Rex’s last home game with the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS .
    .
In other news, my Stillers ground out a win. They may yet wind up winning the AFC North, assuming they can beat Cincy next week at home. I dunno what that would be worth, other than a home game in the first round, b/c its looking like the road to Arizona runs thru Foxboro.
    .
And Johnny Football got another “Welcome to the NFL, Rookie”. I thought the Brownies would live down to themselves and get him and his career turned into a smoking crater against the Stillers earlier in the season, but they managed to hold off until today. He is not long for the League.
    .
I can’t believe how bad the Colts look tonight.

    • phred says:

Congrats on your Stillers, scribe : )
      .
I didn’t see the JETS, the Colts, or the Ain’ts, but I have to say, I didn’t see those games shaping up the way they did…
      .
Here’s hoping the QB-less Cards manage to upset the Squawks ; )

      • scribe says:

I didn’t count any chickens – I was noting that NE appears to be locking up home field throughout, making the road to Az go through Foxboro.
        .
While the Bills are a good team, I dunno that they’ll even get into the playoffs. Theybe next year.
need to have a lot of dominoes fall their way and I’m inclined to believe that one of them (don’t know which) will fail to drop Buffalo’s way. Maybe next year.
        .
Now I’m going to watch The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Thanks and good night….

  13. bloopie2 says:

Why aren’t there enough (more) “really good” quarterbacks? There are lots of “really good” players at every other position. Have all the advances in defenses, coverages, etc. over the last 5-10 years made the last generation’s quarterbacks not good enough any more? Are the defensive players too big and fast and smart these days? As I recall (is this correct?) a decent qb, and his team, used to be able to thrive in the league. Now, it seems, you need to be a star to be called “good”.
