Lookie here! My own digs!

In case you’ve been wondering what I’ve been bubbling about over the past few weeks, it was this move. I’m really grateful that Jane invited me to build a shack in her back yard. She and Pach and Jamie have been doing superb work setting up the new mega site. I’d like to thank Caz, too, who designed the site; I was not a very easy person to work with on the design, I’m afraid.

I’ll be moving things in over the next several days (blogroll, categories, those kinds of things). And I’m planning some ways to collect weedy information in even more forms. After that’s done, I’ll explain a little more about what I’m going to try to do here, that’s slightly different from my old TNH digs.

In the meantime, make yourself at home.

    Woohoo! Marcy,

I just noticed the button on top. Congrats and thanks for all your work. This place looks reeeeal nice.

On a personal note, I’m always amazed at how much you know and how insightful your posts are. One thing for certain, I will never play chess or poker with you.

  2. selise says:

this is most excellent, emptywheel – i feel a desire to give you a house warming present (if such a thing were possible).

beautiful new site – and i have to just say, thank you thank you for the 12 pt. verdana.

  3. TobyWollin says:

Hey – this redectorating business is mega, really. If you need some irises for the garden in front of your shack, let me know…always happy to oblige.

  4. selise says:

tried leaving you a comment earlier but it seems to have disappeared into the ether.

beautiful! feel like i want to give you a housewarming gift (if such a thing were possible).

love your new site – and i just gotta say: thank you thank you for the 12t verdana!

  5. selise says:

    re: tip jar.

yeah, i already checked your “support this site” link and your “tip” link. looking forward to seeing them up and running, although i don’t have much $$ to donate, you will certainly get some of it. will have to try to find a way to donate via the non-$ “tips” too.

  6. SadieSue says:

Yippeeeee!! I’m so glad you’re officially part of the family! And I love the colors of this site – elegant & easy to read.

  7. phred says:

    Hiya EW! Nice shack

So I have a quick question for the more tech savvy folks around here… The fonts here at the new digs seem a bit smaller than the old place. Is there a simple way to make ‘em bigger from my end? I’m resolutely trying to put off getting glasses

    • alank says:

Your browser has a text shrinker/grower under the view menu or suchlike. You can override the font size in your browser preferences as well. But would probably counterproductive.

marcy’s post is 12pt verdana, which i love for web text – find it the easiest to read.

the comments, however are 12pt arial, which is smaller and i find it hard to read for more than a minute (at any size)

to increase the size, check the header of your brower (which one do you use?)… you will probably see a button that will make the text bigger (or smaller)… i’m on safari and the buttons have a big “A” or a little “A” for increasing or decreasing the text size.

      • phred says:

Thanks selise! I use Safari too, but I don’t display a header. Turns out when I went to the View menu there were commands to Make Text Bigger and Smaller. Doh. I really shouldn’t post comments before I finish my coffee in the morning…

  8. phred says:

Uh oh, apparently I can’t use old fashioned smileys here, since they disappeared from my previous comment. Are colons and semi-colons command characters here? Man, it’s discouraging how clueless I am about these things…

  9. alank says:

    ARTHUR
The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite,
held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by
Divine Providence … that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur …

    Music stops.

That is why I am your king!

    DENNIS
Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis
for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a
mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

    ARTHUR
    Be quiet!

    DENNIS
You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power
just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

    ARTHUR
    Shut up!

    DENNIS
I mean, if I went ’round saying I was an Emperor just because some
moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!

ARTHUR (grabbing DENNIS by the collar)
Shut up, will you, shut up!

    DENNIS
Ah! NOW … we see the violence inherent in the system.

  10. alank says:

You can’t edit your post and the preview function still doesn’t work. The operations underneath are far from optimal.

  11. billinturkey says:

Congratulations on the new digs. Very posh. Let me know if you’d like to go carpet shopping….

  12. musicsleuth says:

Yay! Nice new digs. I second the comment about 12pt Verdana and not-quite-white background. Much easier on the old eyes. How exciting!

  13. msmolly says:

All of the reply buttons say “replyReply” so I guess she’s lookin’ for replies, ya think? *g*

  14. pdaly says:

    Looks great, emptywheel.

I’m glad to see the FDL site is loading fast again after the initial slowness on Saturday.

One thing that I noticed: your posts are now time stamped with Pacific time instead of the Eastern Time.

Can someone add “Pacific Time” to the time and date line for posts and comments?

  15. readerOfTeaLeaves says:

What a thrill to see this Marcy. It’s a nice, clean, easy-to-read-through look. Just heartening to see what y’all have been up to. Congrats!!

    • Neil says:

      EW, RoTL,
Great to see you both here. It looks like your just expanded your readership many fold. I hope we don’t lose Jodi in the move. He he.

  16. eyesonthestreet says:

Its so nice you are back here, coming back full circle. I hope all of your TNH posts will be available here in an archive and searchable.

My eyesight, despite my name, is not so good, so the gray type and light blue are hard for me to read. any chance of going back to black type and using navy blue instead of light blue?

  17. BooRadley says:

To say I am happy about this would be a gross understatement. I’ve been very concerned Marcy about how you would keep your work financially sustainable. “The workers deserve their wage.” I think Jane is the absolute best at among many things, figuring out a financially successful model. IMVHO, the latest improvements position FDL to eventually take dead-aim at advertisers who buy from the NYTimes, Compost, Time, Newsweek,… . The new format imvho maximizes advertising options. Untethered to dead trees, FDL, leverages the speed of the tubes, while enlisting terrific and trusted writers to analyze breaking stories in real time. It sounds like one-stop shopping to me.

  18. Evolute says:

Long time lurker looking happily at your new digs and smiling at the solidarity this union brings…

it’s encouraging, and just in time for the primaries with all the chaos, hope/dissapointment and promise in this new year.

  19. msmolly says:

Guess I’ve been terminally confused. I thought TNH *was* your blog.

Anyway, so glad you are here at the FDL community.

  20. Rayne says:

I rather like the empty wheel, turned out just fine, zen-like.

Reminds me in a way of lucky coins used in feng shui, too. Let’s hope this one attracts all the luck you need.

    Congrats on the new digs!

  21. bmaz says:

I HATE moving. We moved residences 3 years ago this coming April, and I am STILL sorting things out. Well, your new digs look very nice and promising. I would also like to not that the first “Google Ad” I saw on the new place here was for the “Scruggs Katrina Group”. Nice touch that! Looks like I better go pick up some beer and chips for the housewarming party….. Beamish of course.

    • Neil says:

Nice touch that! Looks like I better go pick up some beer and chips for the housewarming party….. Beamish of course.

Great idea, a housewarming party! Can we have one EW, can we, can we? Of course, you’ll have to pick just the right topic but if you announce it in advance, you’ll have lots of company. The best part? you won’t have much cleanup.

  22. elef says:

Marcy, I’ve lurked but never thanked you before. So the time has come – THANKS. Started lurking at the lakejust before the Scooter trial and discovered your work at the same time. You’ve definitely helped me understand the world we live in.

  23. ShezZK says:

Congrats Marcy! This is way cool that you have your own subdomain and section now. I’m thrilled, you certainly deserve this and I’m looking forward to seeing you build it up. Welcome Home and Best Wishes.

  24. FormerFed says:

Marcy, congrats on the cool new site. Look forward to even more and better from your amazing mind and fingers.

  25. tejanarusa says:

Hi Marcy, congratulations! Really, nothing against Next Hurrah, but I found it often hard to read. This is much, much prettier! I’m mostly just checking to see if my FDL registration works here; seems so. Back to work for me, but I’m thrilled to see Waxman following up,and even more thrilled to see you “wading through the weeds.”

  26. Neil says:

Here’s a suggestion-everyone has one of those. Any chance the tech gurus can add a “Recent posts” box under the Tool box and Blog Roll box? I like’d the recent posts feature on TNH,it’s handy.

Have I told you, I just love the new place. Beside giving me an extra three hours of workday, it’s fast!

You may be a midwestern resident but you wear the southern california style so well.

  27. HeatherinSFBay says:

I’ve never been a commenter, generally a lurker on FDL and TNH, but gotta take a moment to say congrats and the new house…it’s purdy!

  28. JodiDog says:

I’ve still got my eye on you emptywheel.

Had to change my name a bit. Can’t remember if I ever enrolled
over at Firedoglake before. Not in my password list. Must have not used it if I did.

    Jodi, now known as JodiDog.

  29. Quebecois says:

    Marcy,

Been lurking at TNH since I ended up at FDL for Scooter’s trial. Happy that Jane is helping out. Can’t wait to see your blog evolve..

  30. prostratedragon says:

    “Lookie?!” That was my line!

I like the soft-neutral look a lot. Good luck on launching your new features, and congratulations.

  31. SouthernDragon says:

Had to check that my three coins were still in their little home. Thought maybe one had taken a shine to becoming a star on emptywheel’s new place on the tubz.

They’re all snuggled and warm so figured I might as well break out the I Ching and seek a little wisdom. Lessee, toss the coins, draw hexagram, look it up.
