And Speaking of Missing Emails
So far the RNC has spent $231,615 looking for Turdblossom’s missing emails.
The Sleuth has learned, the hunt for those missing gigabytes has cost the RNC more than $250,000.
According to an RNC filing with the Federal Election Commission, the committee paid $231,615 in October to Stroz Friedberg,a forensics firm chock full of former FBI agents hired to retrieve thelost electronic data. The report shows the committee also paid $41,217in October to Covington & Burling, the law firm representing the RNC on the missing e-mail controversy.
[snip]
But now that we know the RNC has paid Stroz Friedberg nearly aquarter million dollars, does that mean they’ve found the missinge-mail messages?
The RNC isn’t saying, nor is Stroz Friedberg.
So add that $231,615 to the $90,000 that Congressman Tom Feeney has paid to FTI to (apparently) recover his own missing emails.
This habit of deleting emails is beginning to cost the Republicans. How long do you think it’ll be before they start a special kind of defense fund, the email reconstruction fund (and celebrity golf tournament)?
Well, I heard there is going to be a big shindig at President Bush 41’s shoreline retreat to celebrate the new Windmill.
Oh my, EW, you just hit on a profit center. I think I might be able to pitch this to a corporation with a captive insurance company; they could set up a reserve fund, draft an email protection policy and collect premiums from all RNC-member incumbents, invest them in the market, payout from those tax-free and tax-reduced reserves as claims are made against the policy.
The problem I see with this model, though, is that there could be so many demands on cash flow for criminal defense and campaign funds over the near term that this fledgling email insurance business might not be able to pull in enough premiums. What a shame.
OT – but a heads up that Kathleen EPU’d her question to Ashcroft, his answer and a brief summary on his ’they hate us for our freedoms’ approach at the end of the CALEA post.
But, what with Abramoff in the clink and everything, who will lead the â€GOP Email Reconstruction Fund and Celebrity Golf Tournamentâ€? Norquist? Reed? Wait… if it can be held in Scotland at teh St. Andrews Royal and Ancient Club, Hot Tub Tom DeCantgetlayed can head up the charity!
Well, I heard we were going to bold things for no reason, because that’s what the majority of the electorate wants.
It hasn’t cost them nearly enough yet. I sincerely hope those former FBIers raise their rates considerably
Rayne, with enough venture behind your idea, it could be worth further consideration; however, I’d suggest that clients should be billed on a tiered payment schedule. Anyone whose emails had any reference to DoJ should pay triple fees
Rayne and ROTL: It is a great idea, and I would like to get in on this action… Just wondering, though — how much could we charge for a full presidential pardon if all else fails?
readerOfTeaLeaves — yeah, I was wondering how one would set up that tier based on a risk profile that estimates the client’s likelihood of losing emails or having a major hard drive failure…
– Do you email or do you ask your assistant to do it?
– Do you know what a Blackberry is? Do you have one?
– Do you have another device besides Blackberry or a laptop that you use for emails?
– How many devices besides the office-provided PC’s or phones do you use?
– Have you ever been subpoenaed?
– Have you retained counsel?
– Have you retained counsel specializing in white collar crime?
– Have you ever been read into a program?
– Do you know if you have ever been named in an executive order?
– Do you ever go to Native American-owned/operated casinos?
– Have you ever gotten tickets to an event from a lobbyist?
– Have you ever â€accidentally†called an escort service in Washington DC?
– Are you a graduate of GWU, Liberty, Regent University, so on…
I could go on forever and ever…that’s a lot of emails that are going missing out there.
Kinda makes the Hadley email seem quaint! Ahhh, the good ol’ days…
Don’t forget that when Rove was about to be indicted, his magical email turned up….
Why wasn’t Rove indicted for this exchange alone?:

11:07 a.m – Cooper emails his bureau chief after speaking to Rove. (Newsweek)
[…] Cooper wrote that Rove offered him a â€big warning†not to â€get too far out on Wilson.†Rove told Cooper that Wilson’s trip had not been authorized by â€DCIAâ€â€“CIA Director George Tenet–or Vice President Dick Cheney. Rather, â€it was, KR said, Wilson’s [sic] wife, who apparently works at the agency on WMD (weapons of mass destruction) issues who authorized the trip.â€
After 11:07 a.m. – Karl Rove e-mails deputy national security adviser Stephen Hadley after speaking to Cooper. (AP)
Matt Cooper called to give me a heads-up that he’s got a welfare reform story coming. When he finished his brief heads-up he immediately launched into Niger. Isn’t this damaging? Hasn’t the president been hurt? I didn’t take the bait, but I said if I were him I wouldn’t get Time far out in front on this.
(snip)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but:
â€I didn’t take the bait,â€
and
â€it was, KR said, Wilson’s [sic] wife, who apparently works at the agency on WMD (weapons of mass destruction) issues who authorized the trip.â€
Those don’t square-up, and it does, in fact, look exactly like Rove is ’broadcasting’ the 1×2×6 talking points to Cooper – as part of a carefuly coordinated Plan to Politically Smear the Wilsons.
So, what if Rove didn’t use her name? Karl Rove, political operative, gave a reporter for Time magazine the following information:
– wife of Joe Wilson
– works at the CIA
– on WMD issues
– sent Joe to Niger
Didn’t he really, in effect, give Cooper her name, too?
Rayne, a few additional questions — off the top of my head — to assess client risk:
– Are you now, or have you ever been, ’NOT gay’? (Billing applies only to clients from ’red states’; clients from ’blue states’ can waive this fee.)
– Have you ever been arrested in a men’s bathroom on a morals charge?
– Have you ever called a post-op patient, who was under sedation in a hospital recovery room, to insist that s/he sign legal documents immediately – even under duress’? (If call occurred within 24 hours post-op, additional charges apply.)
– Have you ever intervened to have an FBI agent removed from an active investigation and reassigned to Gitmo?
Sojourner, tough question… how much for a presidential pardon…? Ask Scooter Libby
I thought that at least by now most people would have given up on this Rove fascination.
I guess it is like moths circling a candle flame. Just can’t let it go.
Matt Cooper’s supervisor has admitted in a recorded interview that the magazine has a new email policy. The gist is Pearlstine is saying the e is for evidence, and only codewords are to go in substantive emails from now on, instead of actually saying forensicable things.
